This is part 13 of excerpts from the trail log which was located on a New York portion of the Appalachian trail. For the post which explains this series, click here.  Each new edition includes a quote from a hiker, along with this writer's insight into what the person might have meant. Your interpretation may be different!

Following is my selection of this week's thoughts of a hiker.

72°   Amazing Day - And I Simply Decided to be Happy Again.

November is typically a cold month, the first where Winter weather starts to make its appearance. A normal November day might have high temperatures somewhere in the 50s. It usually snows at least once during the month. So the first thing that struck me by this writer was the reference to the temperature. It was an "amazing day" with a temperature in the 70s. I can imagine this hiker was grinning as he or she made their way along the trail.

Hiking Log - I Decided...

And then the most important part of this short entry: "I simply decided to be happy again." What made this person unhappy in the past? Is the path to happiness as easy as saying it is so? I have decided to be happy and therefore I am? Can it be that simple?

As I've shared previously, people who spend time in the outdoors seem to be healthier - physically, mentally and emotionally. Nature can bring out the best in us. A quick online search "health benefits of nature" will prove the fact that time in nature can heal whatever ails us. A follow-up search for attributes of hikers will prove the benefits of the outdoors even more. Apparently hikers can be more focused, creative, independent and fit than their non-hiking counterparts. And they tend to appreciate the simple things in life.

So back to our hiker of the moment. He or she must have been struggling with something. And on this day, during a walk in the woods, they opted to share their decision to be happy. Do I think this person could have made a decision to be happy and then it simply became so? I do! I believe we all have the ability to make the rest of our lives whatever we want them to be. We want to be miserable? We will. We want to be happy? We can.

So yes, I believe this hiker made a decision to take their life to a better place. I give this person huge kudos for making a choice to change the trajectory of their life. And I hope they continue to move right past happy to joyful, ecstatic and more.

If you have something on your mind, throw some stuff in a backpack, and go talk to nature! It can work wonders.

Disclosure: Unlike the rest of the posts, for this one I personally know the specific person who wrote the above words. I've been paying attention to how their life has been going, and I can attest that they are definitely happier now than a year ago when these words hit paper. And that makes my heart smile.

I believe that people can choose to be happy - even in the face of great difficulties - there is a serenity that goes with happiness or perhaps happiness goes with serenity - and it takes a commitment to that peace and acceptance sometimes to be happy

Beautifully written Kat.  Love the outdoors but hate the weather here in Florida.

Would rather be in cooler climate and mountains.  Always more inspiring.  Congrats on staying healthy!  Healthy is closer to happy.

Kat, you did such a great job writing this post. Choosing to be happy is important and something that I think takes being mindful to do. Connecting with nature really does help, there's something so relaxing about it.

Hi Kat

What a thoughtful post. I have read many in this series but I particularly liked what you had to say this time. Nature has a way of soothing us and making us feel better. But I think that hiker took it far beyond the moment of the hike...how wonderful to simply make that decision and move forward beyond what haad been troubling them.

Exercise has proven to be of benefit when dealing with depression.. so maybe the act of taking the hike set the tone for your hiker deciding to be happy again.  That temperature would have been perfect!

Hi Kat, Love reading your thoughts about hiking. I do agree that people that embrace nature tend to be less burdened with the cares of the world and have better attitudes.

I love the little footnote about actually knowing this hiker because we get to know that they doing better....it's not open ended, leaving us wondering about them.

Always being an outdoor kid nature brought a smile with its wonder. It doesn't take long for that grin to reappear every time I walk out the door. For many the miles will be long before they can reach their happiness but it is out there as this hiker found. Here via Kathy Streib

It CAN be that simple - as evidenced by your acquaintance, Kat! And, I totally agree - the great outdoors definitely 'freshens' the mind, body & spirit.

Happy Friday!

Debbie Reynolds - Certainly, while they are in the woods!

Sharon Tara - I agree; for this one entry, I do know the ending.

Kevin J. May - Yes, some may need a lot of time in the woods to get that lower blood pressure and higher spirits but it will happen!

Patricia Feager - I agree about the journal being a part of history. I found one my dad was keeping and it was so interesting reading about things we did as a family when we were young. I'm so glad he wrote it.

Kat Palmiotti - I had to come back to this post of yours again and re-read it along with the comments. I really, really love what you did to add joy and curiosity to this Hiking Log. It would make a great book! Very insightful too!

Could it be, that we were born to pursue a quest for happiness and it all starts with being a child opening ourselves up to discovery by making sense of the world around us? There are so many benefits to searching for happiness outdoors. Physically, Mentally, and Spiritually it is healthy. You can meet interesting people along the way; but never forget you're an interesting character others meet along the trails too! Learning to fall in love with nature by hitting the road and sticking to the trails, setting goals, and not giving up when the going gets tough can often make the most unlovable people more lovable just by learning to love themselves.

Please continue with this awesome series on the Hiking Log. I absolutely love it. You have me sold or should I say souled!!!

Patricia

Patricia Feager - What a wonderful comment! Children are very open to everything; happiness, wonder, experiences. There are many benefits to being outdoors, and enjoying them fully requires a child-like appreciation! I love what you said about meeting interesting people, but being one of the interesting people.

I have not been very consistent with hiking blog. Thank you for the kick in the pants I needed to get going again. :-)
