September 11, 2001- What I Want to Remember.

This day is still hard for many. Friends, co-workers, family members were lost. Lives are still being impacted. Just last month a friend’s brother-in-lawGod bless America was rushed to the hospital with a tumor related to his work at Ground Zero.

There are things that happened we never can or never should forget.

What I am remembering this day is what came after that horrific morning.

I am choosing to remember how people, men, and women, came together to help those they’d never met and would probably never see again.

I want to remember other countries who supported us with their care and concern.

I remember how so many proudly flew their American flag at their home and on their car.

I remember many who wore their U.S. Flag pin proudly every day.

I tear up when I remember the many responders who gave no thought to their personal life but thought only of helping where they could.

And finally, to this day, I cannot keep a dry eye when I hear God Bless America, because I remember what happened after Congress addressed the nation...they came together and broke out in an impromptu chorus of God Bless America.

This is a post that says I love my country...America. I love the people in it and the spirit that brought our forefathers here.

That spirit is still here. We have to look for it with eyes that want to see it, not ones that are ready with the latest quip.

How are you remembering today?

Sometimes it takes something really bad to remind us that we're way more alike than we are different.  He wasn't someone I knew well, but one of my classmates was one of the fatalities in the Pentagon.  His wife carries on his memories for the daughter that was soon to be born that day.

I was working in midtown Manhattan when the planes hit and will never forget.  The day was surreal, but the spirit of New York prevailed.  Witnessing so many offering to help complete strangers in an effort to get home to their loved ones was very moving.

We heal over time.

My son was born on this day 5 years ago so there is also joy that I have on this day.  He's too young to understand what happened.  It may sound selfish, but I feel for him when he tells people when his birthday is and the response is hesitation and then a somber look.  I understand their feelings.

Kathy Streib that terrible tragedy and the trauma brought us together as a country. We have to find ways to come together, and stay together, without attacking and destroying one another. There has been a great deal of growing hostility among our country the past number of years. I hope we can evolve into a society that can see that each of us holds certain things to be important, and each of us cares deeply about certain things but to come together as a society means respect, compromise, acceptance, tolerance and getting the great minds among our citizens to thing "outside the box" to solve problems. We don't even know what we can accomplish but we do know that hatred only brings destruction. I hope 9/11 reminds us all that we have to find ways to stand together.

It's more about what I'll never forget. Laying in my comfortable bed doing my morning stretch while watching my morning TV programs and all of a sudden I'm watching a huge jet crashing through Tower I and screaming to my wife who was in the bathtub.

Within a few moments after that Janis and I witnessed the second jet crash through Tower II in total disbelief. It was then no longer just speculation that it may have been an accident albeit we had that feeling deep down inside. We then knew there was no doubt that America had been viciously attacked.

Then the crash into the Pentagon and #93 all within moments as we stood in front of our TV breathless watching in horror as we knew that the American landscape had changed forever and life as we once knew it and had taken so much for granted had forever changed.

There are certain times in your life that you will always remember exactly wheere you were and what you were doing. I remember sitting in my 3rd period biology class in high school when an announcement came through the PA system that John F Kennedy had been shot.

The entire school was then summoned to the student center whence it was sadly announced that he had been pronounced dead. That too changed my life and was something I'll never forget as long as I live.

To end this on a more positive note I remember driving up over the Ortega Highway from Lake Elsinore to San Juan Capistrano on July 20, 1969 whence it was being announced on the radio that the first man ever to step onto the surface of the moon was quoted as saying, "One step for Man. One giant step for Mankind"

May we all hold these precious moments very near and dear to our hearts and souls and may GOD Bless America!

I was originally set to be on the upper floors of the towers for 2 seperate reasons that day- and neither ultimately came to fruition. Instead I wound up at the midtown Headquarters for JP Morgan Chase. I was sitting on the trading desks when the first headlines were hitting- and the first stories crossing the wire was "Fire at WTC" and "Small plane hits WTC" there was some concern initially. It didn't take long for things to change and panic set in. Next thing we knew we were hearing about bombs all over the city- which turned out to be false. It was a terrifying day. I heard the final conversations with the Cantor Fitzgerald employees over the squak box- something that haunts me forever.

Thank you for sharing that video, I had never seen that before and for bringing out the good in that horrific day. We all have our memories, forever embedded in us of exactly what we were doing at that moment on that day, and for us (my family) it was a time to realize that so much of the day to day blessings we have get overlooked and much of whgat we focus on is insignificant in the grans cheme of things, and this annual remembrance brings that all rushing back.

It's too bad we as humans cant come together every day to do good, be good all the time!

I remember that day too well... calling my sister's cell phone every five minutes for more than an hour. She was a pilot for United.

Fortunately, she and her fellow travelers were safe. Sadly too many others were not. What an unfortunate wake-up call for all of us.

I would hope, if anything, that 9/11 is a message for the world that an inability to have empathy for our fellow beings brings too high a cost to humanity.

Beautiful thoughts Kathy about an almost surrealistic event that woke up this country to the reality of the proximity of evil in the world.

Thank you for sharing that video.  Saved this one to review and comment.  Each of us has memories and I appreciate yours in choosing to remember what this country stands for.  I feel very lucky, as do others that were born here.  We never had to "decide" to choose a country to reside where freedom is given readily.  Amen girl!

On 9/11, I sat in the tallest building in New Orleans, wondering if this was an attack on all cities. I can remember who I was talking to and what I was talking about. All I could think about was my family and the core values I hold dear. Why does it take tragedy to bring you back to what is most important?
