Europe Lake is one of the crown jewels of Door County.  One of three inland lakes in northern Door County, this northern-most inland lake offers a sandy bottom and year-round fun--boating, kayaking, swimming, fishing, ice skating, snow shoeing and ice fishing.  Learn more about this Door County waterfront home for sale here.

12352 Europe Lake Road (also known as 12353 Europe Lake Court) is a first-time listing, being sold by the original owners.  They tell the story in their own words:

Every home has a story.  We decided to build our house, “The Cottage”, after sharing a condo in Baileys Harbor WI with Suzy’s parents for ten years.  The land was purchased from a neighbor who owned the large parcel of land behind The Cottage, in 2002.

Construction started in the Fall of 2002, and we took possession of The Cottage in August of 2003.  Our goal was to build a home where we could retire, and where our four children and hoped-for grandchildren could gather.  We decided we wanted to be on an inland lake, instead of Lake Michigan or Green Bay, because an inland lake is so much more inviting for kids to go swimming and boating.  You can put a life jacket on your ten-year-old, put her in a kayak, and let her go on Europe Lake without too much worry.

We wanted a traditional cottage look, with wooden ceilings and a big screen porch.  We thought we wanted the screen porch on the south side of the house.  Our builder, Carl T. Carlson, convinced us that the north side would be cooler, and more private.  Boy, was he right!  When we gather at The Cottage, the post-and-beam screen porch is where everyone gathers, and where all meals are eaten.  He also pushed us to make the screen porch bigger than the original plan, which allows both a porch swing, and a dining table.  The beautiful sun room, opposite, on the South side of The Cottage, has yet to get much use because everyone immediately heads to the screen porch!

The kitchen is spacious and open, but the appliances are the traditional, simple kind that remind us of the cabins we stayed in when we were young.  When we don’t have guests, we switch off the second refrigerator.  A big ceiling fan keeps the air moving in the kitchen.  There are ceiling fans in all the bedrooms, the sunroom, the screen porch, the loft, and the kitchen.  The sunroom, all the bedrooms, the main living and dining area, and, (of course), the screen porch all have wooden ceilings.  The kitchen and main room have knotty pine flooring.  The foundation is insulated, poured concrete, completed by Adam Greenwood, Carl’s stepson.

Carl T. Carlson, our builder, lived his entire life on Europe Lake Road, just down the hill from where our driveway turns off the road.  Adam still lives at the top of the hill on Europe Lake Road, in a “Sears Roebuck” house that he recently remodeled.  Adam plows our driveway, in agreement with our two neighbors that share the driveway.  The exterior siding of The Cottage is cedar.  There’s an in-line water filter in the crawl space.  We use a paper filter, and change it twice per year.  The water softener folks tell us not to use carbon, which would interfere with the ‘Back Flow” of the water softener.  We have both a water softener and an iron filter.  The water softener is a top-end unit from Eco-Water, just installed in August, 2018 ($3,800).   We also have an exhaust fan in the crawl space that exhausts out the north side of the foundation, to keep the air in the crawl space healthy.   We get decent Internet at The Cottage from Hughesnet, using the satellite on the roof  (we don't watch tv when we're at the Lake).  The house is wired for a stereo, and has stereo speakers in the sun room, the loft, the kitchen, the dining room/living room, and the screen porch.  There’s even a wired sub-woofer in the northeast corner of the dining room.  The stereo and all the speakers stay with The Cottage.

Our wood stove is a Jotul, from the well-known Norwegian company, purchased from The Energy Shop in Green Bay.  We chose the high-gloss blue finish, instead of the flat black, and have never regretted spending the extra money.  The stove does a pretty good job of heating the whole house in the winter.  The clean-out for the chimney is readily accessible from the chimney chase on the lake side of the house.

Lake Life Stories from Europe Lake

Our builder Carl encouraged us to “Go Big” with the garage, which turned out to be a great idea.  The garage (I think of it as a barn) has a ton of space for storage for cars, water toys and tools.  It also has a large storage space available on the second story, accessible from the outside, back stairs.  We had a little leakage in the upper, double doors, but that was fixed by the installation of new doors and trim a few years back.  The garage door has an electric opener, but you have to manually assist it, or it will stop part way up.  On the west side of the garage, we had a large Kohler backup generator professionally installed.  As it turns out, we’ve never needed it, and it also has never worked properly.  It runs sometimes, and won’t run other times.  It is being sold as is, with no guarantee!

Between The Cottage and Europe Lake is an area of wetland.  In the Spring, a section the path to the lake is sometimes underwater as the snow melts.   There are a number of swamp oaks, white oaks and pine trees that we’ve planted in the wetland area and in other areas of the lot, as well as a number of cedars and other trees that are coming up on their own.  As the young trees grow, they’ll need to be trimmed, to keep a lake view.  We have two areas where you can get down to the lake from “The Berm”.  We’ve always had our dock on the north end of The Berm walkway.  That area of shore was damaged by ice, and we have a DNR permit to repair 20 feet of shore with gravel, covered by groundcloth, then covered by rock.  We have a pile of rock moved to that area for the project, but it remains to be completed.  You can clear more of the land to allow for different views--we've decided to leave the view (as much or as little of it as you want for privacy) up to a new owner, because we like the privacy.

PATHS WITH THE ACCESS TO OVER 225 FEET OF THE SHORE ON EUROPE LAKE

House is screened from Europe Lake Shore

Our dock is from Pier-A-Matic, in Kiel, WI.   It’s designed to be put in an out by one person, in a short period of time.  The pier comes apart into pieces that one man can handle.  This allows you to put the pier in early in the Spring, and to take it out just as late in the Fall as you please.  All the parts that have wooden slats are currently in the garage, where they’re stored every winter.  Our pier has an eight foot section coming off the shore, followed by three steps down, then another 8 foot section, then an 8 by 12 foot section.   We also have a frame for storing boats upside down in the water, along the shore.  The frame has two big, white crossbars, and is sitting on the top of the berm, by the shore.

We've loved this home on the shores of Europe Lake, with three bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths and a sleeping loft (as well as sun room and screen porch).  The Cottage no longer fits our life circumstances, but it’s very hard to give up.  It’s a very, very special place.----Dan and Suzy
