Wordless Wednesday...Summer’s Noisemakers.

cicada

Since I was a little girl waiting outside my piano teacher’s home for my mother to pick me up, I have been fascinated by these bugs.

I would wait out by the tree in her front yard because I didn’t want to have to listen to the person who had the lesson after mine. Not that they weren’t a good musician but you can only take so many minutes of listening to music scales.

At certain times of the year, I would find the shells or skin of these cicadae. I was fascinated by them and freaked my mother out the first time I got in the car with a handful of their remains.

You can listen to the sound they make in this video.

Kathy,

What a lovely childhood memory complete with music...reminds of me of a short story by Truman Capote "Music for chameleons".  It was also the title of his book of short stories. A

I  used to put crickets into a jar with holes poked in the tin lid, stuffed with grass, LOL. Like they eat grass?

We do hear crickets outside our back door at night and that's only been this year. So I think they're moving into our territory from somewhere.

Kathy we have them around here, and it is amazing the amount of noise these little guys can make.

It's been like listening to a virtual orchestra each year whether in PA or FL. I like hearing their cyclic songs. Our Mom's are silly aren't they?

They certainly have a way of getting attention.  They are not at all quiet.

Dorie Dillard CRS GRI ABR when we moved to Northern VA years ago, our neighbors warned us about the noise because we had trees all around us! They were loud!

Myrl Jeffcoat I also love observing ants. One of my favorite gifts was an ant farm.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents you won't believe this but I saw my first lightning bug when I traveled with Larry to Lawrence KS to visit his family. I don"t think we see many grasshoppers here. I wonder if iguanas eat them??

I think the reason we see fewer fireflies and grasshoppers, Kathy, is because we broke the planet.

Kathy Streib I am so glad you are putting it on your list.  He was a great writer, and he set out to write short stories with an economy of words and at the same time painting a beautiful scenario...Let me know what you think. In the whole history of the New Yorker Magazine, he was the only one to not have a story rejected on the first try.   A

I remember my roommates girlfriend from Brooklyn came in Oklahoma to visit. She was so scared of their noise she didn't want to leave the apartment.

Morning Kathy.

I for one, actually like to hear them.  The decibel level can be annoying, but all in all, I like it
