The minimalist and green movements share some common themes, like the value associated with consuming fewer resources.
But getting to less can be a challenge for some of us. We like our ''staff'' and it is hard to let things ,we do not use and do not need anymore, go.... As Realtors, we've seen it all.
Lorrie Semler from Dallas just wrote a post about challenges of selling a hoarder home, and even that is a very extreme example, we all can get rid a thing or few to make our homes cleaner, calmer, and just better.
A minimalist aesthetic helps you consume less, clean less and maybe experience less stress.
Leo Babauta, author of the Power of Less, provides some ways to create a minimalist home:
1. Eliminate. The fewer pieces of furniture and decorations, the better. Eliminate as many pieces as you can without sacrificing comfort. Think: quality over quantity.
2. Clear surfaces. Keep only furniture on floors and clear out stacks of books, magazines, and other clutter. Keep your walls too, leave there only your best and most favorite artwork.
3. Declutter for easy cleaning. Focus on one room at a time. Choose few favorite decorative items. Think of the style for your home that offers visual peace.
4. Plain colors. Solid colors are the best. Keep it clean and subtle. White is classic for mimimalist homes. Use a splashes of bright color carefully in your art, pillows, assessories.
5. Relax and enjoy.
