Want to Go Minimal in Your Home?

The minimalist and green movements share some common themes, like the value associated with consuming fewer resources.

But getting to less can be a challenge for some of us. We like our ''staff'' and it is hard to let things ,we do not use and do not need anymore, go.... As Realtors, we've seen it all.
Lorrie Semler from Dallas just wrote a post about challenges of selling a hoarder home, and even that is a very extreme example, we all can get rid a thing or few to make our homes cleaner, calmer, and just better.

A minimalist aesthetic helps you consume less, clean less and maybe experience less stress.

Leo Babauta, author of the Power of Less, provides some ways to create a minimalist home:

1. Eliminate. The fewer pieces of furniture and decorations, the better. Eliminate as many pieces as you can without sacrificing comfort.  Think: quality over quantity.

2. Clear surfaces. Keep only furniture on floors and clear out stacks of books, magazines, and other clutter.  Keep your walls too, leave there only your best and most favorite artwork.

3. Declutter for easy cleaning.  Focus on one room at a time.  Choose few favorite decorative items. Think of the style for your home that offers visual peace.

4. Plain colors. Solid colors are the best. Keep it clean and subtle. White is classic for mimimalist homes. Use a splashes of bright color carefully in your art, pillows, assessories.

5. Relax and enjoy.

I definitely feel more at peace when there is less "stuff." I just got rid of a large file cabinet the other day and there is more space in my office and I love it. Now I'm working on getting rid of a large table as well.

Clutter drives me crazy, so I fight with it all the time, and have no idea how it comes back almost every day:(((

Haha, so true - it does keep coming back. They should make Clutter Raid or some similar spray.

Good morning, Inna Ivchenko I love this post.... I'm definitely a minimalist.... if I don't use it, it's GONE.... my home is always "staged' and without any clutter anywhere including the basement.... everything stored is in plastic bins with covers and stacked neatly under the stairway....I have bakers' racks on wheels in the basement for storing large items that I cannot store in the living space....  very organized.... that's my OCD kicking in.

Inna, have known many of my clients selling the "big house" and going smaller with less "stuff" in their lives, and seem much happier.

Like many of other agents I see a lot of houses and the minimalistic trend is here to stay. The houses that are clean and light sell faster. if anyone is thinking about selling the house, go and see your competition and if your house needs a fresh paint, repairs, and declutter ~ do it. If you can not do it yourself, bring a professional. And do consider donating all items you do not use or do not need. I'm sure someone will love them again. Let them go.

Hi Inna: I tell my sellers if ,when they are finished removing furniture and rearranging closets, the home looks like nobody lives there, it's perfect.

Absolutely!

We recently downsized and had to donate, trash and sell a lot of "stuff". It was a lot of work, but very rewarding. I LOVE my smaller space! I don't miss any of the furnishings that I thought were going to be so hard to part with.

I've done it 2 years ago when my son left to college and soon when my daughter leaves, i can go less again and do not need to live in a district for a school. And you are right, things that had memories suddently do not matter when they are out of sight and mind:) Sharon Tara

I can relate to that. I was the one who was always saying: when my kids have their own life, i'm going to live in a studio, but garden and view of the ocean are the must. i can have the smallest home, but i want my view:)

How about this Inna Ivchenko A studio overlooking the ocean with a small frig on one side of the bed as a night stand and another small wine frig on the other side of the bed. I do not need a big closet or a large bathroom...but a NY Style pizza place nearby with awesome slices is a must  :)

YES, yes yes less is so much more for your life and spirit!
There is an AMAZING documentary on Netflix about these 2 young guys who 'had it all' and realized they had NOTHING that mattered! They give Ted talks and they are truly inspiring.
If you want more life - let go of stuff.
I'll tell you, though . . . I am about red and bright and shiny . . . so the neutrals are not for me. That would quickly change if I listed my house!  <3

Inna, I like change. So, I have a beautiful "Tuff Shed" that looks like an old red barn and throughout the seasons, I go into my "retail shop" and change things out, so that I don't need to buy more, I just use what I have and store the rest. Except for candles, and beautiful wine glasses (one gets used, the other broken!), I am happy with this arrangement. But! I am also an artist and having my art around me, as I create it, makes me very happy. Mosaic stepping stones are my latest outlet, but those stay outside!

Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Real Estate I like that idea of rotating the objects from time to time, and it's just like getting new stuff.  I'll have to try it, but will also need a big shed for storage, haha.

I'm not sure it would work for me since I have different phases: one day I want everything to be white, another day I go bright color, now it is gray.......and i'm getting too tired of it. I'm going back to earthy relaxing zen colors.

Tell me about it, Bob. It seems like crowing in the house without us noticing and suddenly there are piles and piles of unused staff.
