What's Love Got to do with It?

Buying a home in CharlotteSadly, both prices for housing and weddings continue to skyrocket in 2018. Research from Pew recently found that young, unmarried Americans, with the desire to someday marry, cite financial stability as the number one reason for holding off on marriage.

Younger generations are simply prioritizing life events in creative ways, based on their budgets and beliefs. Many millennial couples are moving away from the norm by co-buying a home with a significant other before walking down the aisle together.

As housing prices continue to climb and average down payments continue to increase, research has found that it would take the average single person over a decade to save for a home compared to four years for a couple.

For those still saving up, the majority of both singles and couple-respondents in the survey agreed that saving and buying a home can add more stress to a relationship than saving and planning for a wedding; 63% of singles and 59% of couples cited it as the bigger stressor.

Regardless, our younger Charlotte home buyers are savvy enough to realize that buying a home is definitely a better way to spend their hard-earned money than renting.

Debe

Given where prices are headed in many area, I suspect more people will be opting for the downpayment instead of a large wedding, and buying a house before they are married.

Debe sadly in out market on Maui, 60 % of buyers are coming in from the mainland and our young people of Maui are having a hard time buying homes. Then again the rents are high so what choice do you have.

Good morning Debe - yes I can believe all of that.  My daughter and son in law would agree with that as well.  That just bought their house.

The answer is obvious - skip the expensive wedding and put into a house. Ah, if only it were that simple right? Great infographic and post. D

The high cost of weddings is something that I just can't justify. Owning a home is far more responsible and practical. It's too bad that it must be either/or for most young couples.

Debe, we need to relax lending standards a tad to allow first-time homebuyers into the American Dream.  Thanks

I think someone has made this suggestion already, but parents and/or grandparents will usually contribute to the fund for love birds to purchase their home sooner rather than later. Nothing beats home ownership for  security in ones future.

Frightening to hear that wedding are in the 30K range? A wedding lasts a few hours and a house hopefully increases in value over time. I guess I'm too practical.

Hi Debe Maxwell, CRS, I always thought weddings were not necessary, didn't have one when I got married to my ex-husband. Young people have their priorities set, a home purchase is a better choice.

I had a very small wedding and am okay with not having spent thousands of dollars for one day - instead we were able to buy that first home sooner - Good post!

I got married over dim sum at my last and final wedding, and personally do not think all of the hoopla is worth it. Watching my team member Josh plan a wedding with his girlfriend has been interesting. At one point, they were very upset when they inspected a spot popular for weddings out in Winters, California, and the ferris wheel was not there. I mean, really, you just can't get married without a ferris wheel today!!!

There are some real good reasons monetarily (and credit-wise) to buy a home with a partner ASAP, Debe Maxwell, CRS ... I just urge anyone entering into such a situation to be completely and brutally honest with one another about Credit, spending habits, and monetary goals prior to entering the process ..

As an LO, I can't tell you how many delicate situations I've found myself in with applicants that have not done this.  But monetarily, it can be a very wise move, with the right buyers/applicants ...

I cannot imagine spending thousands and thousands of dollars on a wedding. It simply makes no sense, especially when the couple has to save to pay for it. Much more reasonable to save for a down payment on a home.
