 Take a look...

'More than 60 solar-powered smart trash cans hit the streets in South Baltimore today, marking the start of a program for the cans that compact trash and recyclables using energy from the sun and can signal to trash collectors when they need to be emptied.'

They can be opened with your foot by pushing a pedal.

The City is hoping that this design will confine litter better and compact the trash so it doesn’t overflow.

Read more by  Brandon Weigel, the managing editor of Baltimore Fishbowl.

Note: The green cans, at the top, were given to Baltimore City residents two years ago.

Love the idea of this Margaret!  We need those at the beach especially on weekends when the trash seems to overflow!

Technically, in Florida I could drop 14 pounds of non-commercial trash and as long as it's smaller than a cubic yard there would be no littering fine. I am hopeful that your streets and parks reap the benefit of this technology.
