alstereotype.jpg We have subscribers and clients that are relocating to the Huntsville area from all over the country. I moved here through Kansas City and St Louis and my husband to be via Seattle, so we know how typical Alabama stereotypes can make some of us a bit anxious about the move, well at least at first. :)

However, many are not bothered by stereotypes and are more interested in such things as schools, medical care, housing, and quality of life issues in general. Thus, when I read an interesting article from ABC news today that ranked states for their quality of Children's Health Care, I just had to pass on some of their findings to those readers who are anticipating relocating.

The Northeast and Heartland States dominated the top of the rankings and the Southern States the lower portion of the list. No surprise right!! However note this excerpt regarding Alabama's ranking:

Among Southern states, Alabama stood out as an exception to the trend, ranking 14th overall for kids' health care.

Certainly with regard to Alabama, it was a matter of leadership," Davis said. "The state was the first one to take advantage of the state child health care program in 1997. It was also very efficient at forging a public-private partnership specifically with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama.

Elizabeth, I grew up in Alabama, in Montgomery and Birmingham, went to the University in Tuscaloosa and UAB.  The hospital at UAB is one of the top teaching hospitals in the country.  I think it is funny how most people across the country think folks in the south are not up to snuff.  Let me tell you, the joke is on everyone else, they have a very nice lifestyle better than the rat race of the east coast I live in.  I hope to go back there and live when I retire.

Audrey, I had no idea you were from my neck of the woods. Come on back! Our market is booming, at least in Huntsville. Good to know about the hospital at UAB. I agree with you about the lifestyle here. It is wonderful, isn't it? I lived in Alexandria, VA for a short time. Loved it, but do love the laid back way of life here in the South. Thanks for the great information Audrey!

I recall working in AL when corporate came in from WI. Man said our taxes couldn't possibly be higher than theirs. He was surprised when he learned about the Birmingham city employment tax. It put us over his home area. AL is not cheap!
