John F. Kennedy in a speech given at Rice University in September of 1962 encouraged Americans to do better, to be better in his words:
"We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too."

At the time people thought to put a man on the moon was impossible, too hard, we didn't have the technology. Many would say it is impossible to accomplish this goal in twenty years let alone getting it done before the end of the decade. Through the dedication of men and women from many different scientific backgrounds and the brave pilots that sacrificed their lives for the greater good, we Americans got the job done. We had taken the impossible and made it possible for all.

I often think past the Tang and Space Food Sticks that came out of the Space Program to all the luxuries we take for granted today. You want to know if it is raining at the beach before you head out.? Click on the weather app to see cloud cover from a satellite hovering over Florida. Need to know how to get to a new restaurant? Open up Waze which uses GPS satellites to guide you on your way. Our way of life is completely different from what it could be because one man had a dream to challenge to the frontier of space.

Diabetes has touched my life in several ways. To my Father that developed the disease later in life to friends who have children that were born stricken with this life-threatening ailment. It is for the children that I hold the greatest hope that the impossible will be made possible in the coming years.

Preventative medicine is always much more effective than treating a symptom that is already present in the body. I believe that through genetic engineering science will be able to detect before a child is born that they are predisposed to Type I Diabetes and that through science will be able to subvert the malady in the womb.

In researching to see if this is just my hallucination or if the people of science are thinking in these terms. With a few clicks and the right combination of keywords, I found in the US National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health an article titled "Prevention of type 1 diabetes in NOD mice by genetic engineering of hematopoietic stem cells."https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18679630

Do I understand much if any of the article? No. I do see that science is making strides in the preventative approach to treating Type I Diabetes.

My hope and prayer for today is that not because it is easy but because we love our children so much humanity will once again rise to the occasion and make the terrible curse of type 1 diabetes something that we take for granted as a thing of the past.
