Oktoberfest in Kentlands, October 14, 2018

 

The City of Gaithersburg presents the 27th annual celebration of Oktoberfest on Sunday, October 14, 2018, from noon to 5 p.m. The festival takes place in and around the Arts Barn, Kentlands Mansion and Kentlands Village Green and along Main Street and Market Square. Admission and parking are free. Free wheelchair accessible shuttle service will run regularly during festival hours to and from satellite parking at 101 Orchard Ridge Drive, just off of Quince Orchard Road.

Experience a taste of Germany right in your own backyard with performances by the ever-popular Alte Kameraden German Band and Alt-Washingtonia Bavarian Dancers. Savor traditional festival food while enjoying selections from Dogfish Head and other local microbreweries or sipping Maryland varietal wines.

This is a City of Gaithersburg, Maryland announcement.

This Saturday, new vendor Kelli Alley brings her beautiful, handmade soaps to the Main Street Farmers Market, with scents including Cherry Blossom, Wildflower, Espresso, and Coconut Mango.  Each soap is crafted from Coconut, Sunflower, Olive and Canola Oil, and is made without animal products or  skin-irritating surfactants. She has been making soaps for 5 years and first sold them in Maine as Penobscot Candle & Soap.  In May, Kelli moved to Maryland to marry her husband, who is in the military and based in this area. Kelli and her husband have been enjoying exploring this region, which is how they came upon our Farmers Market in June. "The downtown was gorgeous," she said, adding that she was excited to join the other vendors and meet visitors to the market.

Recipe of the Week: 
Sweet Potato and Apple Casserole

Ingredients
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened 
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice 
  • 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1/2-inch rings 
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
 Directions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350. Place the sweet potatoes on a piece of aluminum foil and roast until they can be easily pierced with a fork, about 1 hour. Let cool slightly.
  2. Trim the ends and pull off the peels; slice into 1/2-inch rounds.
  3. Butter a small (31/2-quart) casserole dish with half the butter. In a bowl, stir together the cinnamon, ginger and allspice. Arrange half the apple rings and sweet-potato rounds in alternating layers in the dish; sprinkle with half the spice mixture and half the maple syrup. Layer in the rest of the apples and sweet potatoes, ending with the apples. Sprinkle with the remaining spices, drizzle with the remaining syrup; dot with the rest of the butter.
  4. Cover and bake until the apples are very tender, about 45 minutes.
