Fork in the road

Life can sometimes be a confusing series of forks in the road. Which way should I turn? Which is the best path to take? Of course, the only way to find out is to make the selection and proceed as if it is the only logical choice.

I have taken many forks in the road throughout my life and based on the result I think I did pretty well.

I remember one instance early in my career when I was working at a company that was divesting itself. I so badly wanted to stay in my present position with the parent company that I threatened to leave if I could not get what I wanted. It wasn’t just about money. I wanted to stay in my comfort zone.

But my skill set was needed in the new company and despite my resistance, I was assigned to a new position. In the end, the new company prospered and I did as well. I ultimately became an expert in my field and achieved greater success than I could have known had I stayed in my old position. To this day I look back and smile, reflecting on how wonderfully it all turned out.

Of course, there were other times when I didn’t take the best fork in the road. I didn’t move to California in the 1950’s and buy land. And like a lot of us, I didn’t buy Amazon when it IPOed. So in some respects, I might have made a few choices that could have better altered my future, at least financially. But as they say, money isn’t everything. You wouldn’t know that by looking at the state of the world today, because it seems the whole world views success only in monetary terms.

Like every other agent, I am bombarded daily with phone calls, emails, and texts from people who promise to make me successful beyond my wildest dreams. Perhaps their version of success and mine are not the same. Honestly, I do not want to go to my grave knowing that my greatest accomplishment was the million dollar sale I closed last year. There just has to be more.

Success can come in many forms. Sometimes it is helping others accomplish their goals without compensation. Other times it is trying something that you never thought you would be interested in and find that you enjoy it (I think it is called growth).

Sometimes success could be simply overcoming one of those damn unfair problems that life throws at you even if it wasn’t your choice.

It is often said that we don’t regret the chances we took, but the chances we didn’t take. So when you come to that next fork in the road make your choice as best you can, but above all, don’t forget to enjoy the journey.

Remember, you started with nothing so your success is almost guaranteed. You just need to recognize all you have accomplished and to be grateful for the wonderful journey.
