If you don't know anything about Texas, don't be surprised if people say Texas is its own country or like a whole other country. According to history books, it became its own country called "The Republic of Texas," from 1836 until it joined the Union in 1845. Sixteen years later, Texas and 10 other states formed a Confederacy until the Civil War forced it back into the Union where it has stayed ever since.

There are people in Texas that never traveled outside the State of Texas for the following reasons:

  • You can watch the Dallas Cowboys
  • Visit or climb the Guadalupe Mountains (Signal Peak) located in Guadalupe Mountains National Park (elevation 8, 751 feet, above sea level) while experiencing mountains, deserts, dunes, canyons, and big night sky
  • Explore the Space Center in Houston
  • Enjoy beaches
  • Feel the breezes off the Gulf Coast
  • See the Pyramids at Moody Gardens in Galveston
  • Paddle the Rio Grand
  • Shop until you drop
  • Relax on Padre Island on the southern end of barrier island
  • Visit the National Seashore
  • Hike, bike, camp, or take photographs in Big Bend National Park
  • Taste Texas Barbecue, Texas Chili, TexMex Food, Texas Tamales and never get tired
  • Climb and explore Caverns and Caves
  • See Cave Paintings in Del Rio
  • Explore Spanish Missions
  • Enjoy the River Walk in San Antonio
  • See dinosaur footprints
  • Enjoy the rodeo
  • Go to Cowtown (Fort Worth), "City of Cowboys, Cattle Drives, and Cultural Districts
  • Visit and stay overnight in a historic presidio
  • Visit wineries
  • Spend a day at Six Flags in Arlington
  • Go to Sea World
  • Walk into the Alamo
  • Visit Japanese Gardens
  • See amazing Zoos
  • Dallas Arboretum
  • Devil's Backbone
  • Arts, Crafts, Entertainment
  • And that's just the beginning!

Whether you choose the South Texas Plains, Gulf Coast, Piney Woods, Prairies and Lakes, Hill Country, Big Bend, Panhandle Plains, or just come for the fun, there's always something exciting to do.

There's lots to do and see in Texas, Patricia.  I can also think of another reason why some don't leave Texas.  It takes an hour and a half just to drive across the city of Dallas.  And, that was a decade ago.

The Great State of Texas is how I was taught to pronounce it. lol .

My mother was born and raised on a farm in Liberty Hill, outside of Georgetown and I was born in Denison, up by the Oklahoma border, as my father was in the Air Force.

Patricia Feager hi Patricia... I'm looking forward to that day of meeting you, enjoying a great cup of coffee, shopping, and just having fun! Unfortunately, our good friends who lived in Dallas for decades moved to Florida so our reason for travelling to Dallas went away before I "knew" you here in the Rain.

Nice spotlight for Texas Patricia. You gave perfect reasons why so many never leave the state.

Myrl Jeffcoat - Well.... if it took an hour and a half to get across Dallas a decade ago, you can probably multiple that by at least 3 by now. Although, I can't be certain. We have had so many new road improvements and fly-overs it would be shocking for anyone who hasn't been here in awhile. My GPS is always confused and recalculating continuously!

Clay R. Seay - Thanks for sharing your TX background! I'm not a native Texans but I got here officially on 3/27/1997. Although I've been to Georgetown (very lovely), I never heard of Liberty Hill. I like the name of that town!

I have been to Denison, Texas. It's so quaint and interesting! I even visited the Eisenhower homestead where he was born. That kitchen looks so ancient!!! If you ever get back to Dennison, let me know and we'll meet up and I'll try to gather up a few more ActiveRainers to join me!

Have a nice day!

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 - This is the second state I found where those who are native to their State never want to move. Maine was the other one.

I remember the day I left Illinois to come to Texas. The moving truck left my driveway back home and I headed out to Texas. By the time I arrived and got to Plano, TX, I had to stop and stay overnight in a hotel because I discovered Texas was a lot larger than I thought! When I woke up the next morning, I discovered I only needed to drive about 30 more minute to reach my destination. That was of course, before GPS! Silly me!!!

I know Texans are BIG on Texas. I can see why. It sounds as if it has much to offer. I know Bernie really likes Austin. Although, he hasn't visited for a number of years.  Great idea for a post, Patricia. It sounds like a number of us want to visit  - especially for the opportunity to meet you.  D

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - Austin is always fun to visit. The next time you and Bernie gets to Austin, if you haven't been to Lake Travis, you might want to visit the Oasis.  It reminds me of places I visited in Europe. It's very romantic too!

Awe.... thank you for letting me know you would like the opportunity to meet me. I feel the same about you!

Hi Patricia... each time I've met a good virtual friend in the Rain face-to-face, it's always been an amazing experience like we've known each other forever. And it also enhances the virtual relationship, I've found. It's why I look forward to meeitng you personally one day, as well.
