As much as we all wish, common sense it not always present in the minds of every individual. And so, silly things are not so silly and they become a problem. And sometimes a serious problem. Take driving in your condo parking garage!

Proper Protocol When Driving Through Your Condo Parking Deck

This blog post subject is prompted by a community email I received from one of the Midtown Atlanta condominium buildings where I've sold numerous homes, and have a couple rentals as well. It would seem to be common sense to slow down in the parking garage, but then again....

So, how about a few simple guidelines to help you out:

  • All motor vehicles shall abide by these rules for the safety of EVERYONE!
  • Ensure your vehicle lights are on for good visibility while inside the parking deck
  • The speed limit throughout the parking deck is 5MPH (Slow down Mario!)
  • The direction of travel is ONE-WAY up and ONE-WAY down, ALWAYS TO THE LEFT! (This rule is somewhat particular to the design of this particular garage and how you manuver through the garage.)
  • You must stop at ALL STOP SIGNS and STOP LINES which are lcoated at the bottom of EVERY ramp!
  • Be courteous to other drivers and remember to always watch for pedestrians.

Now, most of you reading this have never been in this particular garage, but design was not one of the architect's strong points when it comes to this one....the corners are very sharp and tight (there are special metal posts installed at each corner to keep people from hitting the large exhaust fans on each level.....) So not only do you need to be watching you don't hit a post as you turn, you have to be watching for someone else coming in the garage from the other direction!

And you need time. For this particular garage, the top floor is the 10th floor. And with all those sharp corners, it literally can take you 10 minutes to get out of the garage. So plan you time accordingly and allow for this so you don't have to play race car driver to get out of the garage!
