Identifying your tech-savvy customer

Nielsen is preparing to report their Q1 2008 findings for mobile buyers.

What do these stastics mean for you, the real estate professionals, and your consumers?  As usage of text messaging increases overall, so does the increase of adoption and implementing it into other uses; product/service information and purchase decisions.  As consumers continue to see the value in receiving information via text message about products and services, it opens up another stream for real estate professionals to get information out to them.

Why do people love it? It's simple (for most), it's convenient, and it's fast.  They don't have to waste time talking on the phone, when they can easily flip open their mobile phone (something you can nearly guarantee is attached to their hip) and read a quick message.  It's fun.  It's generally not interrupting.  It's both personal and impersonal;  you can have private conversations without everyone around listening to your conversation.  From a consumer point of view, they don't have to call someone; rather, the information is available to them right then and there.

Text messaging gives consumers power. They can participate in voting for nationwide competitions, like American Idol.  Why do you think politicians added it to their campaigns?  They can find out information on their own first.  It makes them feel like they are the ones in control and as a consumer, and they should be.

It's not just the youngsters anymore either.  Text messaging was initially thought of as a "younger generation" thing.  Well, those younger generations are five years older now and entering into, if not already, interest in the real estate market.  They are teaching their mom's, dad's and even grandparents that texting is the best way to get things done, in a hurry.  It's not longer "call me".  It's "text me".

Of course, as with all technology, you will always have people who resist; just like the internet. Not everyone prefers using the it, but if companies didn't have it, they would lose a large quantity of customers.  And that is why you are online, blogging, right now! :)

The avenues and opportunities of marketing to your potential customers are opening up; are you ready to utilize them?

Erika,

Great information. I also see a lot of consumers carrying blackberrys or I-phones and they also e-mail.

Great points Erika. I feel the same way regarding information that is right there on the web. It's non intrusive.

When I think about it from the "non-interupting" point of view it makes sense. That's exactly why I prefer email to phone, the recipient can read it at their convenience, as can I when they reply. I just haven't gotten into texting.

Not all of my clients/customers are that into tech. but some are.

Great info thanks.  I have been getting and trying to get more tech savvy clients.  They are generally better informed and have already done their own research so they know what they want and how much they can afford.  It is a trade off.  They will usually want more communication but, they do not have to be educated about the process they just want to go go go.

I communicate primarily via text message...it can be difficult as times to "transition" to a client who wants to communicate via the 'ol fashioned telephone!

Good stats! now technology makes everything automated and faster, no wonder many people started using text messages for a quick touch base. Beware, it won't provide the personal touch, just like an email. Phone calls or handwritten notes are always better ways of creating impact.

Mike, you're right!  They are always keeping that cell phone with them at all times it seems. (i'm guilty of that).  Knowing that, it's important to try and incorporate that into your method of reaching them!  Thanks for stopping by!

Leslie, prefering email to phone, is now the prefering text messages to email.  I have some friends overseas, and although it costs me a quarter per pop, I'd rather send them a couple of text messages from my cell phone to theirs to catch up, than call or email them.  I have a feeling you'll get into it the more popular it becomes and you'll realize how convenient and easy it is... but just to warn you, once you start, youc can't stop!  Thanks for your comments!!

Larry,  I see that's becoming more popular for todays consumer for all types of products and services; they are finding out a lot of information on their own.  It's saves you time in the beginning from having to answer to all the general questions, now that they can find answers online or otherwise, but in the end, it does speed up the whole process for you and consumers expect a speedy response, sometimes making for a greedy consumer.  But hey, if they want to buy, that's a good thing!  Thanks for your comment!

I've been utlizing txt messaging with other realtor's and some of my clients for quite some time.   It's an amazing way to be less intrusive and i'm finding that some people really enjoy using it.

Tina,  I'm impressed to see that texting is your primary communication.  That's awesome!  If I ever move to VA, I'll text ya ;)

Carolina, Thanks!  You're right that it sometimes doesn't provide the "personal touch", but I would be much more open to getting a text message updating me on my homebuying status on a Saturday evening, over a phone call! Use the phone, text, email and cards, and you are hitting all communication areas!  Thanks for your comments!

Greg, it's a great way to be subtle.  And it saves you the time, as well.  Which is something many of us can't find enough of in a day!  I'm glad it's working for you!  Thanks for commenting

Steven,  exactly!  It gets the point across and you don't have to deal with the small talk!  I got my mum into it now :)  Thanks for commenting

Kelly,  Thanks for stopping by.  Glad you see the benefit.. Once you start, you can't stop.  It's funny seeing the people who have evolved over the past couple of years.  Two years ago my brother couldn't stand when my phone would get messages.  Now that pretty much the only way I can get a hold of him!

Richard, Thanks for the compliments!  I know, as if the mobile phone doesn't already provide enough efficiency...

As consumers adapt this technology, so should the sellers.  This is the next way of the world, not just a phase as some suggest.
