I Took My Mother To A Brothel!!!!

Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Elite 513.520.5305 www.LizTour.com SAL.2002007747

I'm betting THAT certainly got your attention didn't it?

There's a method to my madness with this post, and it's to help prove that titles matter.

It's Tuesday so it's time for another Ask An Ambassador post, but in this case, putting the AAA phrase in front of the title would have detracted from the impact of the title.  I needed it to stand alone, perhaps cause a shock and a twinge of curiousity about what was happening inside the post??

Now if all you want is your curiousity satisfied, here's the Cliff Notes version.  Last week my mother and I enjoyed a Western Mediterrean cruise that included a tour of Pompeii.  And among the excavated sites from this city destroyed in 79 A.D. was a brothel, complete with illustrated paintings on the ceiling that customers could have used to place their orders (and no, I didn't take any pictures!).

So while my title is accurate since I actually DID take my mother to a brothel, it's more of a clickbait approach isn't it?  The context is ENTIRELY different than you might have thought at first glance.

For me, titles fall into two categories:

1.  Those designed solely to get clicks and attention from a wider audience than the subject matter might otherwise gather (such as the one for this post)

2.  To be factual.

Now most of the posts I write probably fall into that second category, and those are my moneymakers.

They appeal to a much smaller audience, but one that already has interest in the topic and knows what to expect when they click to open the post.

And with a factual title, I'm more likely to gain some SEO.

For example:

Kings Local School District Condos For Sale

What's My Mason Ohio Condo Worth?  September 2018 Update

Fischer Adding More Patio Homes To Renaissance Community

There should be ZERO surprise to anyone as to what to expect with the post since the title clearly defines the subject matter.  The content is there to amplify the title.  No surprises, no shocks, no clickbait.  Sgt Friday at work :)

None of those posts are likely to generate tremendous views or any comments at all.  But what they do?  They cause the phone to ring.  It might be next week, it might be in 3 years, but subdivision/niche housing posts are my bread and butter for generating business.

For each post, consider your audience.

If your audience is other Rainers, you can get fast and loose with your title.

If you're looking for consumer views, then for me it's the factual approach so Google will help place the post and then the consumer will find the title and snippet in the search results and click through to me.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help!

Great post, but I was seriousy disappointed that there were no photos of bloomers hanging to dry on balconies.  Umm, no red lights either now that I think about it!!!  Your topic is vluable to note.

Bill,  Your title certainly got my attention.  But, you're right.   Long tail, you know what you're looking for, is where most buyers are.  But thanks for the laugh or shock, I should say!

Good morning Liz and Bill Spear. Like others, I, too, fell for the title and just HAD to know what the post was all about! It was worth the read and a great post. Thanks for sharing and for the good reminders.

I agree you need the facts to back it up and that's how I usually do it, but the grab ya and no it's not really that is sometimes something I use on social media to get people to my page.

BLiz- so many thoughts running through my head, so little time, and too much of a filter (if you know what I mean.) Titles are so important. It doesn't make a bit of difference how good your content is if no one stops to read it.

I may be the only person who clicked this link because I had a deja vu moment. :) I did (inadvertantly) take my mother to a brothel. Back in the 80's. In Hamburg. No need to elaborate with the full story. Let's just say it was a great story that gave us many laughs for years to come. ;)

For the record, I also read the post. As usual you're spot on with your advice and observations. Nice job.

Catchy titles do indeed make us click, after all, your title made me click! The hard part is coming with creative titles, although you seem to have that mastered. Sounds like you had a great trip!

Love your post on titles, and of course, we all had to look at the post.

You made a good point:

They cause the phone to ring.  It might be next week, it might be in 3 years, but subdivision/niche housing posts are my bread and butter for generating business.

I've had people ask if I ever get business from my blog. Those neighborhood posts are fantastic!

I have visited where you were and it is a site to see. On the issue of titles, yes clever and catchy can be OK but devoid of content it makes no sense and is a waste of time.

When I read the Title, I began to prepare a great message of how you should show respect for your parents. I was going to shame you and suggest a public flogging.

You got my attention, and I did manage to read the post.

Your points are well taken and Now I can settle down and heed your advice.

You got a much closer shot of Mt Vesuvius than I did. It's one of those volcanoes that you always recognize, no matter where you see it. And yes, my first thought was that was Pompeii. My favorite theme was Venus in a clam shell.
