Crime Prevention Month Weekly Safety Tip: Make the Right Call

October is Crime Prevention Month. This week we focus on “Make the Right Call”. This message was posted by Officer Dan Lane at the Gaithersburg Police Department.

Make the Right Call by using 9-1-1 only for emergencies and (301)279-8000 only to report non-emergencies. Having a better understanding of when to call each of these important phone numbers will help ensure that your specific need is most effectively met.

Visit the Montgomery County Police webpage to view a copy of the "Make the Right Call" brochure that has great general information. The examples included are guidelines of when you might need to contact 9-1-1, 301-279-8000, and 3-1-1.

Montgomery County residents Make the Right Call by using

9-1-1 only for emergencies,

301-279-8000 only to report non-emergencies, and

3-1-1 for general Montgomery County government information.

Having a better understanding of when to call each of these three important phone numbers will help ensure that your specific need is most effectively met.

I hope others will read this post too. We should not call 911 for non emergencies.

Good morning Roy Kelley,

Good for you for getting out the word and encouraging residents to watch out for each other and taking time to make sure their neighbors and friends are okay. Love the numbers you provide because making the right call is crucial!

Way to many people use 9-1-1 and tie  up the phone for non-emergencies.

Good morning ROy. Thanks for the reminder about 911. 311 is a disaster here in Chicago. Not beneficial at all! Enjoy your day!

That is good information for people in your area, I don't think I know the right numbers to call if I were to witness a crime, other than 911.

The City of Gaithersburg notices on farmers' markets include a weekly recipe.

Recipe of the Week:
Ginger Beef and Kale
Consider this recipe a blueprint for other stir-fries, swapping in your favorite dark, leafy greens (bok choy, Swiss chard) or any quick-cooking cut of lean beef (round, sirloin).

Ingredients for 4 servings
  • 1 pound filet mignon, thinly sliced
  •  4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons finely grated fresh ginger
  • 1 medium onion, grated on the small holes of a box grater (1/2 cup)
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 2 small, dried, hot red chiles, crumbled
  • 1/4 teaspoon coarse salt
  • 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 bunch kale (1 1/2 pounds), stems discarded, leaves cut into
  • 3 pieces each, and rinsed well
  • 1/2 cup homemade or low-sodium store-bought beef stock
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
Directions
  1. Combine beef, ginger, garlic, onion, paprika, chiles, and salt in a bowl, making sure beef is well coated.
  2. Heat oil in a large saute pan over medium-high heat. Add beef mixture, and cook, stirring frequently, until lightly browned, 2 to 3 minutes.
  3. Stir in kale, cover, and reduce heat to medium-low. Cook, stirring occasionally, until wilted and tender, 5 to 7 minutes. Uncover, and raise heat to medium-high. Add stock, and cook, stirring and scraping bottom of pan, for 1 minute. Season with pepper.

Hello Roy,  I am amaze at the number of parents that do not teach the kids about 911 and why they should know it.

Law enforcement has been trying for years to separate the emergency calls from those nonemergency. Having two numbers is smart but is taking a long time to catch one.
