When you look back at how people once smoked everywhere, well, it would feel like you're in France. It is very hard to quit smoking when you're grabbing dinner at a smoke-fueled French brassiere with the patron next to you balancing a cigarette on the edge of her dessert plate. You learn very fast how to ask for a cigarette in French.
I tried to quit smoking all through my 20s, 30s and 40s. Every scheme pretty much imaginable, I tried it. Our environment in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s was not inducive to quitting smoking. In fact, it was downright hostile because you could not escape cigarette smoke no matter where you went. Very hard to quit smoking when everyone around you is.
But nowadays, it's hard to find a place in California where you can light up. And that's a huge benefit.
