Dia de Los Muertos Celebrations in Carlsbad 2018
Leo Carrillo Historic Ranch Park is a beautiful place to visit in the residential community of Rancho Carrillo in Carlsbad, and a very special resource for our community, with a number of events during the year – a movie night, a western festival and celebrations at Christmas.
Another recent and popular addition to the list of fun events is the 2-day Dia de los Muertos Celebration, the “Day of the Dead.”
This popular holiday, a Mexican tradition, around Halloween time is a celebration of life, a time when the spirits of the departed return to visit their families on October 31 and leave on November 2 (I have seen a number of different interpretations of this holiday, as well as dates, when looking online).
Dia de Los Muertos is celebrated with favorite foods and drinks of the departed, and decoration of altars with special objects and photos, to remember and honor the dead.
SATURDAY OCTOBER 27
Take a candle-light tour of the Hacienda to see the decorations and the “ofrendas” (offerings) for film star Leo Carrillo, his wife, Edith, and their daughter, Antoinette, who spent time there. You will also enjoy a buffet dinner of authentic Mexican foods. There will be live entertainment, and adult beverages for purchase.
Tours are from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Tickets are $45 per person (ages 13 and older, please) and may be purchased online.
SUNDAY OCTOBER 28
The Dia de los Muertos Celebration at Leo Carrillo Historic Ranch Park continues on Sunday October 28th from 11 until 3 pm. The cost is $12 per person with children 3 and under free, which includes an $8 dining coupon for lunch.
You will be able to tour the Hacienda and enjoy the traditional decorations, and see the “ofrendas” (offerings) for the Carrillo family. There will be family Open Studio art projects, face painting, and live music throughout the event.
