Most of Sacramento Quarantined for Oriental Fruit Fly

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

A month or so back, I recall reading something in the Sacramento Bee about the Oriental fruit fly invasion into Sacramento. Apparently, over by Stockton and Elder Creek, authorities found a handful of Oriental fruit flies. They put up 600-some bait stations to kill off the males and stop breeding.

What I did not realize was this quarantine affects almost everybody. You can't even give away your own fruit. You can read more in my personal blog today at this link: Sacramento Fruit Trees Under Quarantine for Oriental Fruit Fly.

This is the first I've heard of the quarantine, Elizabeth.  I remember when we had the fruit fly invasion during the 1980s, and Jerry Brown's first years of being Governor.  Malathion spraying was really controversial.

Myrl Jeffcoat This is because you don't get the newspaper. :) Few people do anymore. I know when I'm in Hawaii, I am like a walking newspaper because I get it delivered, yet I'm the only one on my street who does. I share news stories with my neighbors, but when I ask if they would like me to give them my papers when I'm finished reading them, they say no. So it's not the money. Just can't be bothered.

In the 1980s, I sold real estate in Orange County and lived in Newport Beach. I recall Malathion spraying for the Medfly but maybe it was also Oriental fruit fly, dunno.

Hi Elizabeth- When we moved to Florida, our house had an orange tree and two different types of grapefruit trees. We ran into the same issue as you...we couldn't eat and I couldn't give it away. Everyone else had fruit trees too.

Quarantines will probably become more and more common with our "Global Warming" and having so much cargo coming from all around the world transporting all kinds of insects/bugs.

Bob Ratliff Yes, global warming is causing so many issues. Our climate changes kill off some wildlife, change eating habits of creatures. Nature works in balance. Without balance, it is chaos.

I believe you can, but not into a different county, not to spread the issue. But even without flies, most of homeowners never collect their oranges, lemons, and other tree goodies. They are simply wasted:(

No, Inna, you cannot give your fruit away. You can't give it to a neighbor; you can't bring it into the office, and you can't donate it, which is why Harvest Sacramento will not send any volunteers to pick it. You can't even throw it in the street. It must be double-bagged in plastic and disposed of in your garbage.

Love the new photo!
