My daughter called me early a morning last week and said "Dad?", with that tiny voice... all you dads reading this know that 'tiny voice'... the one that says "something's wrong".
"What's wrong?" I asked...
"I went to start my car, this morning, heading to work, and it's making a funny noise."
"What kind of noise?"
"It sounds like there's a Harley Davidson revving in my trunk", she replied. (vivid imagery there, huh?)
"Oh... sounds like your muffler." said I, perhaps too confidently.
"But the 'check engine' light is on, too."
"Oh"... my diagnosis as a muffler suddenly deflated.
She took the car into her repair shop... and it turns out that while parked overnight on the street, someone had stolen her catalytic convertor. That's right. They just cut her converter out of the entire exhaust system, and vanished into the night.
It's going to cost somewhere between $1,200-$2,300 to replace her entire exhaust sytem (except for the muffler, which can be reused) because of the sloppy way they cut her converter from the belly of the car... damaging the entire exhaust system.
The good news.... yes, there's good news... it's covered by insurance, with zero deductible.
The bad news... she's lost her faith in humanity.
