Honestly Is Such A Lonely Word - Billy Joel

"Really? Is that what you are going to wear?" Kathie asks. "You realize that you are wearing a brown shirt with a green pair of pants right?" she says as I head from our bedroom to the kitchen.

She says this because she has my back. She wants me to look my best.

I make an about-face and we head to the bedroom so she can adjust my accoutrements. Kathie picks out a gray shirt and I'm looking dapper.

"Thanks, honey!" I say as I head out to my first appointment.

In my business being honest with a client can be a test of your heart.

Recently I had a client/friend that wanted to list her home with me for sale. I'm always honored when someone chooses my team. From staging to professional photos to crafting a story about their home to attract buyers to distributing that story it's a coordinated planned approach.

When I visited her home all I could see is the clutter. Piles of newspapers, half-completed art projects. It was clean but it was cluttered. "Just list it," she said. "I need to get this home sold."

I always carry a 35mm camera with me, so I took some shots. Returning the next day with printouts of the photos in hand, I presented them to the homeowner.

You should have seen the look on her face. "Wow, I didn't realize how messy my house looks," she said half to herself and half to me. "I'm glad you showed me this. I have to get the place straightened up before your photographer come in."

When presented with the truth you have the choice to ignore it or to take corrective action. Either way, the truth-teller can sleep well at night knowing they have done the right thing.

Once I have told you, you can leave it or you can change it.

Friends don't let friends walk out the door looking a mess.

Not in life and not in business.

Honesty is best, it just has to be given in smaller doses at times.
