Our second day in Cork, we took a ride to Cobh (pronounced "cove"). Cobh is a picturesque town that served as the main harbor for the city of Cork. It is dominated by the spire of St. Colman's Cathedral.
Cobh was a major emigration point for families who left the country during the Great Potato Famine. Approximately two and a half million emigrants departed this port of North America. This was the last place that the Titanic docked before heading across the Atlantic on her tragic journey.
In 1915 the Lusitania sunk off the coast of Cobh thanks to a German submarine. About 1196 passenger, including 127 Americans lost their lives. This helped bring America into World War I.
This noon, we had the pleasure of having lunch with a local in their home. They were so kind and served a lovely lunch. Salad, Potatoes (of course), ham, and dessert. They were a delightful couple, six of enjoyed this one. We were broken up into small groups.
This was one of two days we saw rain, which really amazed us. We really expected to be wet most everyday but enjoyed beautiful weather.
