We may all remember that endearing (or maybe not so endearing) saying that our parents used to yell when we’d done something wrong “be grateful for the roof over your head!” – yeah, that one, well – there’s some truth in that the roof is indeed important and we all should be grateful for it – and look after it. You can look after your roof with regular servicing and maintenance work.
The roof protects us from the rain, sun (maybe not so much in the UK) and wind – but this protection means that our roofs are open to damage and ongoing wear and tear – and many of us neglect to think about this.
Whilst some roofs and certain materials need to be checked far less frequently than others, it is recommended that you do your inspections of your roof at least once or twice a year. Roof inspections can be carried out by any reputable roofing company or individual with roofing experience.
Your Roof is part of your homes curb appeal
We all want our homes to look nice, this goes without saying, but many forget about the roof and take it for granted – it is above our heads after-all, so you’d be forgiven forgetting.
However, the roof carries important ‘curb appeal’ which means neighbours and prospective home buyers will notice when roofs looked tattered un-kept – this can cause devaluations of homes in the general area and can even break the sale of a house. Yes, it really is this important.
Roof maintenance will save you money in the long run
Normally, when we speak about our roofing costing too much, it’s normally because we’ve let it go without any regular checks and this is where roofing companies make the most money – from emergency call-outs.
You’re not going to have time to shop around for the best quotes whilst you’ve got water filling your attic and seeping through into your bedroom – chances are, this kind of fix is going to be exponentially expensive.
By just ensuring you keep up regular maintenance checks on your roof could potentially save you thousands in the long-term, trust me, I’ve seen it happen (my neighbour a few years ago neglected their roof and were hit with a 5 figure bill!)
We normally find roofing issues when it’s fundamentally too late
Homeowners often don’t realise that there’s anything wrong with their roof until something catastrophic happens such as leaks, mould and various other things that are slowly destroying the insulation in your home, wood framing, structural steel – the list goes on!
Maintaining your roof shouldn’t be a chore, it should be peace of mind
What roofing maintenance does is give homeowners peace of mind that things up there are all as they should be. I always tend to use the analogy of servicing your car – you wouldn’t miss one of those because you rely on your vehicle to get you around. Our roofs are actively protecting us from the elements and keeping us cosy in our homes – with this in mind – shouldn’t routine roof maintenance be an absolute necessity?
Schedule in your roofing inspection if you feel you haven’t had one for a while, I guarantee, it’ll be worth it and you’ll feel 100% better when it’s done.
