How Often Does a Northern Flicker Land in Your Yard?

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

This is a bird I rarely see in Sacramento. Maybe because they don't much hang out in Land Park. Or maybe just not my yard. But yesterday I was very excited to have discovered a Northern Flicker prancing around my back yard. I could not get a better photo than the one I'm showing you here because I was on the phone, like usual.

Ha, like a client asked me today where is my office. I told him it's in the sky. He wanted to know physically which office do I frequent or do I simply work out of my house. Yes, like any other agent, I work out of my house. It became apparent I was facing a struggle dealing with an important phone conversation and my urge to shoot a photo of this bird, both happening simulataneously.

Elizabeth, when a great photo opp presents itself, we usually ARE on the phone, but you got a pretty good photo.   Have not seen one either, but maybe we don't have them around here.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents I had to Google Northern Flicker to see what you were talking about and see if it was in our area. Did you know there are "Over 100 common names for the northern flicker are known"  now that fact surprised me. It also surprised me that this bird may be in my area year around. Thanks for the post.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents I had a pair of these nesting in an ancient tree in my Maryland backyard almost 20 years ago, the first summer I moved in to that particular house. They raised two fledglings, it was amazing to watch. To this day they are some of my favorite birds. Try to watch for them: their behaviors can be very amusing.

Wow Elizabeth- amazed that you know your birds. I'm pretty good at recognizing peacocks!!! LOL And sellers need to understand that pricing "a little higher" to make more money may mean eliminating a lot of buyers.

Pricing it higher to "make more money" is a ludicrious idea based on fragile thoughts that have no basis in reality. Nobody is gonna pay more than a home is worth because the price is higher. They might pay more for a bottle of water when crawling through the desert, but not in for an elephant in a slowing market.

Sheila Anderson I bet you have flickers. Look for a flash of yellow under the wing while they are flying. They are larger than most other birds, too.

Bob "RealMan" Timm I spotted my first ever Northern Flicker in Minneapolis. Like you, surprised to discover they have been in the area all my life. We don't notice birds unless we make a point to.

So, my advice is . . . make a point to.

Then before you know it, one day you find yourself buying birding books. You realize the extent of what is happening to you when you actually pack up shit and go out into the wilderness to spot SPECIFIC birds, and discover you are on a mission . . . which you achieve. And you are ELATED. You look in the mirror and say WHO IS THIS PERSON?

Lauren Williams, CPO In our area in Sacramento, I don't see them nesting, more foraging behavior, pecking the ground. And I am simply so delighted to spot the flickers in my grass.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents I remember to this day seeing my first Pileated Woodpecker and my first Eastern Bluebird. Out here in Washington, I'll stop in my tracks to watch the Steller's Jays.
