Don't buy the daggone pens!

As a new agent, you’re feeling one of two ways.  If you joined an agency known for its training program, you’re overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information you’re striving to absorb in your first year of real estate.  If you opted for a smaller agency with little or no training program, you’re likely wondering why the real estate licensing course managed to cover so much information and yet tell you *nothing* about how you actually do the job of a real estate agent.

Either way, you’re right on track for your first year in real estate!

In addition, and in either case, you’re also probably feeling like everyone in the world is trying to sell you something – logo design, SEO services, lead generation programs, Google Map placements and leads.

And you’re absolutely correct – you are the New Agent, the Fresh Meat, the next Sucker Born Every Minute!  You’re learning that a huge part of sales success is in finding buyers and sellers to work with; you don’t yet have an effective marketing program; and you are still enthused and naïve.  You are their Trifecta! Your Real Estate License is *their* lead generation system.

So please please please memorize this mantra:

 I will not spend a dollar on non-essentials until my business is consistently profitable.

An agent who started in real estate just a few months before me spent weeks having a logo designed and having really nice stationary and letters printed with the logo.  It was a circular, 2 color logo and it looked great!  The paper stock was also upgraded and the overall presentation was really nice looking.  And it all went into the recycling bins 9 months later when he had to go back to a 9-5 gig to make the money he didn’t make in real estate.

Now I’m not saying the logo and stationery were to blame – but the time and money spent on branding needed to be spent on building it!  There is no long term if the short term fails.  Survival must come first. . .

So when the Pen Salesperson calls you, repeat your mantra then tell him your mantra.  If you love the idea of personalized pens, tell him to call you back in a year and maybe you’ll buy some to celebrate surviving your first 12 months.  But under no circumstances deceive yourself into thinking personalized pens will help to grow your new business!  It won’t.  And the time, money and hopes you spend on it, need to be spent in productive ways to grow your business.

Seriously, when’s the last time that *you* made a major decision based upon seeing a name on a pen?
