Information Overload Day is October 20!
Unlike computers, you and I can only take in and process so much information at any given time.
I was reminded of this when the wonderful young lady who takes care of my nails and I were having a conversation.
She told me that recently she had to just back away. I asked her did she mean back away from her family, her work? What?
No, she said she needed to back away from so much information being thrown at her.
Between emails, texts, social media, and the news, she wanted to turn everything off for a day.
Sound familiar?
What an appropriate day to observe this! When I grew up, we had 3 television channels, and 2 or 3 local newspapers, as well as local radio stations. We tuned in for the local then world news in the evening then watched at 10 PM for the final nightly news.
Now, you have news coverage 24 hours a day, whether you want it or not.
While the number of newspapers has decreased as has their size, we can visit any number of curated news site on our phones or laptops.
Then there’s information overload about our friends and family via various social networking sites. Who’s going where, eating what, drinking whatever. Pictures of what they ate, their latest selfie, the party you weren’t invited to, or their new car.
Don’t get me wrong, I do love seeing photos from my friends and family but sometimes picking up the phone and speaking to someone trumps scrolling down the page and reading about what they did.
Do you feel you have information overload???
What do you do to take a break from it?
