Information Overload Day is October 20!

Unlike computers, you and I can only take in and process so much questioninformation at any given time.

I was reminded of this when the wonderful young lady who takes care of my nails and I were having a conversation.

She told me that recently she had to just back away. I asked her did she mean back away from her family, her work? What?

No, she said she needed to back away from so much information being thrown at her.

Between emails, texts, social media, and the news, she wanted to turn everything off for a day.

Sound familiar?

What an appropriate day to observe this! When I grew up, we had 3 television channels, and 2 or 3 local newspapers, as well as local radio stations. We tuned in for the local then world news in the evening then watched at 10 PM for the final nightly news.

Now, you have news coverage 24 hours a day, whether you want it or not.

While the number of newspapers has decreased as has their size, we can visit any number of curated news site on our phones or laptops.

information overloadThen there’s information overload about our friends and family via various social networking sites. Who’s going where, eating what, drinking whatever. Pictures of what they ate, their latest selfie, the party you weren’t invited to, or their new car.

Don’t get me wrong, I do love seeing photos from my friends and family but sometimes picking up the phone and speaking to someone trumps scrolling down the page and reading about what they did.

Do you feel you have information overload???

What do you do to take a break from it?

Wayne Martin Absolutely!  I used to want to watch the news to learn what happened around my local area or in the world. Now all you get are politics and talking heads and their opinions. Let us form our own opinion!

Dorie Dillard CRS GRI ABR you have a richer life if you do!  I only spend a few minutes a day, if that much, on Facebook, for example.

Hi Gita Bantwal I think more and more people are doing that.

Michael Jacobs I get what you're saying. I'm better able to tune out what I don't care to hear. Larry...not so much!

Donald Urschalitz and you know what else...with 24 hours talking heads, if you miss it, it will be repeated.

Hi there, agree we have to make choices. It's easy to feel bombarded, especially when spend a lot of time plugged in - so important to step away and clear our heads from all the "stuff."

Kathy,

Ah yes! We found that all this information is a distraction from living one's life to the fullest.  Two years ago we cut cable.  We have always spent time in the great outdoors without our gadget (just the phone to take pictures with).  After I am done with the computer, I shut it down.   The gadgets stay in the office and are being charged.  When we watch TV, it is something we WANT to watch, like sports, or a PBS series, etc.

Mercifully our relatives are not into sending a pix every day nor every other day! Neither are we.  At family affairs, no one takes the phone out to read their stuff,,,A

HI Kathy Streib - Great topic!  My overload is all work related.  Unfortunately, I am plugged in all the time. Because of the shortage of homes, I am constantly scanning the MLS for many of my clients.

I do get out in the yard, plant flowers, pune and sweep up and this is how I regenerate. I leave the phone inside!

I think the 365 day a year, perpetual political campaign mode we now seem to find ourselves in, coupled with the divisiveness that is ripping the country apart, has many of us suffering from information overload.  If it was all good reliable information it wouldn't be so bad.  But, the mud-slingling half truths are exhausting.

In our business Kathy Streib  we need to stay connected .I agree wit Sheri Sperry - MCNE®  with the shortage of listings not being connected could mean losing that house for our buyer

Kathy

We really are assaulted by information 24/7/365 and stepping away can be tough, can’t it?! Sometimes it’s nice to not have access, which is rare. We were in Mexico a few years ago and there was NO service at all - 4 days of being off the grid. It was tough getting use to it.

Kathy, I have learned to shut out all the nonsense... TV is only on for the Baseball Games and it is shut off after it... and the Internet is limited to AR, the MLS and limited news or claimed to be news...Endre

I delete, delete, and delete without reading all the "news."

As for TV, I'm saved from being bombarded by the fact that my husband leaves the sound off and reads the screen. I'm free to read a book without listening to it. Once in a while he'll say "Look at this" so I do.

I think a lot of the information thrown at me each day, if I chose to see it, is really fluff.  I tire of the same political news and perfect instagram photos.  I don't even look at twitter!

I'm betting everyone here has a bit of information overload!  When I tell my daughters that since 10 pm last night, I now have about 50 emails at 6 am, they just shake their heads.  I'm deleting and answering before I get out of bed!
