"Starbucks opened their first U.S. Signing Store, located in Washington, D.C.! The store celebrates the cultural and linguistic pride of Deaf partners and brings communities together by creating a third-place experience for the Deaf community. Inside you'll find enhanced visual communication elements to optimize communication between non-signing and Deaf and hard of hearing partners and customers, including digital notepads, order display screens and a console with two-way keyboards for back-and-forth typed conversations.
Aesthetically, the store design was enhanced to best reflect Deaf culture, including exterior signage and outdoor umbrellas screen-printed with “Starbucks” in fingerspelling. The store also features a mural from Deaf artist and Gallaudet University faculty member Yiqiao Wang. The mural includes a host of letters, signs and symbols representing English, ASL, coffee and celebrates the vibrant spirit of Deaf culture. A unifying statement on the wall reads, "This store is dedicated to people united by sign language and Deaf culture."
On a real estate side, our executive assistant has two years experience working with the deaf community and it has been one of the biggest passions of her life. If anyone knows anyone in the deaf community looking to buy or sell real estate, we would love to have an opportunity to work with them.
