A Point to Ponder When Moving

Real Estate Agent with Florida Supreme Realty SL514814

Messy QuizLast week we helped my Brother in Law downsize and move into a new apartment. Even though he lost one bedroom he gained a nice sized storage / pantry, a larger living room plus a bigger bedroom. In the past three years he went from a 4BR single family 2,200 sf home to a 2 bedroom apt. and now a one bdrm. It's a financial move with the following monthly steps. The home was costing nearly $3,000 with PITI, utilities, maintenance & miscellaneous expenses. The two bedroom about $1,900 all in with the latest move estimated at just over $1K with the disadvantage of a slightly longer commute.

During these life changes the acquisition of bins, plastic bins of all sizes has been happening. We know how much can be accumulated in even  a few short years by a family of only 3, 4 or 5 occupants. We need bins! The thought that we could do without moving boxes rapidly disappeared as the memories and knick-knacks began piling up. Take a peek around YOUR home. They are lurking there too.

Stackabvle BinWe were able to absorb some of the overflow for him and now we are trying to manage through the disorder. How are we doing this? BINS, they're the answer. After seeing his variety of containers we realized picking one size was the route we should take. Buy a bunch and nest them when not in use and stack 'em up when they are, floor to ceiling if necessary. The problem occurs when the lids mysteriously find their way elsewhere never to return. Ever have more lids than bins or worse yet having no matching lids for your bins. That's a feat I can never understand how it's possible. Gremlins at work I guess! Somewhat like the socks in the dryer coming up single. With bin lids it's like they just want to get away from their parent, the BIN. It is all fun & games until moving day is upon you. Bins are practically worthless without a good, sturdy, sealing lid.

Bins can be multipurpose seasonal accessories for many holiday items. Well designed garages work great for bin storage. If you're hearing any commentary from the better half about upsizing, downsizing or any word with MOVE contained within it start your Bin Collection now. You won't be disappointed when that dreaded day comes along. You'll be ORGANIZED!

Good afternoon Kevin. Bins are fine b ut the bottom line for most of us is that we can and should live with less.

Today we have choices but there'll come a time when the decision to lessen our footprint will be made by others. Consumption has a way of doing that.

Downsizing and storage binds can be a good thing. My solution just sell it all .....we can't take it with us when we leave this earth and most of our loved ones wouldn't want it....

That's an excellent point Bob. The kids only want the old photos and typically in digital form. I hate the idea of having my life being shared on a single flash drive. Oh well!

Kevin- I use plastic storage bins for staging. They're easy to carry and hold up better than boxes. But oh yes, we are a society of collectors, aren't we.

I never knew how much until the thought of moving took hold. I like the sound of decluttering and thinning out much better.
