Throughout Washington, and the whole westcoast for that matter, we were engulfed with wildfire smoke as fires raged for months and a relentless heat us Pacific Northwesterners can hardly bare at times. The many wildfires produced so much smoke that we lived in a haze, which maybe our new summer normal, and with the heat, many were using their air conditioning all day.
My house uses a heat pump, which gives centeral AC, and utilizes the furnace as its method of distributing the cool air. In addition, we were having the home's exterior painted during that time and doors and windows were open to the elements. The result was the furnance filtering smokey air and blackening the furnace filter.
Here is a quick video I made on why a furnace filter should be changed regularly.
