Early Voting can be a challenge: how was your experience compare ...

Early Voting can be a challenge. Over the years I have wondered what the benefit of early voting is? Then I was pondering why would one want to vote early? I understand that when you are in the military you need to vote early so your vote can count.   When I was in the military life was simpler. Most of the US Mail was delivered. No one questioned will your votes not be counted.

Fast forward to 2018 and we are always concerned will our votes be counted. So, when the National Association of Realtors decided without input from the membership that there should be a gathering in Boston, MA during the Mid-Term Elections, my first reaction was WHY? Then to boot, why Boston, MA when it gets cold and rainy at this time? Needless to say, I am digressing.

Clearly this decision by NAR, created some extra burden  for most of the Realtors who were planning on attending the Conference. Having heard horror stories over the past few decades, about  boxes of ballots being lost all over the country, I was a bit concerned how my vote should be cast. One option was to get the ballot mailed in. Having experienced the Postal Service’s delays and the numerous misdirected mails, that we have been receiving over the past few years, I was not comfortable with this option.

So, having read the instructions, we spent an evening filling out our ballots, I decided to drive to a secure drop off location. The nearest one I found was in Torrance, CA City Hall. As I drove there I received an unpleasant surprise Friday October 26th, they were closed.

The list of days they were closed were posted on the front entrance door, which was locked of course.

Too bad, that they did not put the dates that they were closed on the Internet. Now you can imagine my surprise and disappointment. As, I was heading back,  Diane was searching for an alternative  drop off point for the ballots from her office.  Some of the  options were:  the Manhattan Beach Library, or the Playa Vista Library and the Marina Del Rey Library. At this point I thought, I might as well go to the Marina Del Rey one, since that is close to our home, and I felt confident that they had a secure operation.

Upon my arrival, I was looking for someone to check my name off the Voting List just as they do it when you vote in person. I was looking and hoping for checks and balances, to ensure that someone is not  voting twice. Anyway, I am thinking a database that prevents multiple voting and control that whose votes were placed in a box.

Well that was not the case, there was  a someone, the best way I could describe him was a lethargic individual who guided me to slide the ballots in the box. I was trying to explain, that I had Diane’s Ballot as well, why I was putting two ballots in the box. Much to my surprise he did not care. Ironically it did not help that the Marine Layer was in and everything appeared to be gloomy😊!

This experience of course made me think about the lack of control, the lack of security and the potential for Voter Fraud seemed very high to me. Afterall, we ordered the ballots on the phone no real checking out how legitimate we were. They mailed the ballots to us through the Postal System. Now with that said  I am just hoping the box I placed our ballots will be delivered to the secure place and counted by some honest people.

There must be a better way, share with me how your early voting went, if you voted early? Hopefully you had a better experience.

Hi Endre

We did our ballots and dropped them off locally yesterday, as we have done several times...no issues. NAR is pretty much the same time every November so it usually conflicts with elections. Last year it was in Chicago and it was colder there than it is here in Boston.

Hi Endre- I don't trust the mail to vote but I also am not sure I trust how we vote anymore. You don't have to show much of anything to identify yourself.

Jeff Dowler, CRS  why NAR does not ask the membership what might be a better alternative? Hence this is the reason I always grouse about them... making decisions in a vacuum.. seems like September or October would be more pleasant...Endre

Don't get me started on California and its voting practices Endre Barath, Jr.   I don't trust mail in ballots and went in person to cast my early ballot...didn't want to take a chance of any travel delay coming back from Boston and missing the election on the 6th.

Here in Texas you have to show a photo ID and your name is checked and verified before you are handed the ballot to complete.  I am sure there is still some questionable votes being cast, but far fewer than in other states!

Hello Endre- - - I have never voted by mail, only in person, on Election Day. You have convinced me this was a good idea to continue to vote in person on November 6(this year). Have a good time in Boston.

The last time we voted we waited over an hour to get our ballots. It makes you wonder about older people and impatient people not voting becasue of standing so long in line. We did absentee this year becasue we weren't sure we would be in town. It also gave us time to research judges and state questions.

Dolores and I voted on the first day of early voting. We were in line over an hour and twenty minutes. The turnout was much larger than anticipated and the scanning equipment was not up to the demands.

Hi Endre... for some reason I've always felt that mailed in ballots were overly prone to cheating/fraud. But I do early vote at the polls and it's very quick and easy for me to do so here in Charlotte.
