I love to see great things, unexpected things, life changing things happen to other people. I think that is one thing that originally attracted me to the TV show Undercover Boss. In those early shows, the employees who were singled out on the program were met with life altering opportunities after the boss in disguise became known. Sometimes, they found other jobs for poor performance, and at other times they were rewarded for excellent performance. Regardless, it was an unexpected change that exploded in their life.
I would never presume that I have any real influence in my community, but I know a lot of people, and those connections know people, and with those contacts things can happen. People around me know that I'm not shy about initiating something that brings about change.
Recently, one of my past clients sent me a text to find out if I would be able to help a group of students in his school obtain specific clothing they need for a club they belong to. The club is designed to teach a group of boys leadership and social graces. It is a great program designed to build strong leaders.
I told him I would get back to him, and I went to a local retailer to see if he would join me in helping these future leaders. The first one I went to said, "Let me get back to you. I think we can help." I had promised him I would pay for 50% of the clothing if his company would provide the other 50%. I know that in retail, at 50%, he would still make a profit.
A short while later, I received a call from the retailer stating that his company would provide $500 toward the purchase. That was awesome. It was more than I expected. Today he called to say that his company has decided to provide $1200. That may cover the full bill. Wow! Less than two months ago, I walked into a business as a complete unknown, and today I was able to see the fruit of that one small effort.
The reality is, that every person has those contacts, knows those people and can make things happen. You may think that's not true, but think about the vast number of people that you know, there are some amazing contacts in that group. Maybe you're not a wizard at fund-raising or making the magic happen. No problem. Most of us aren't, but you know people. What business could you be in that exposes you to more people? Real estate is perfect for that.
One of my clients last year was a producer for a well known TV show. I talked to her about doing videos, and hopefully, somewhere along the way we'll do that. Her talent will become a part of the grand scheme of things for me and my company. But, she is more than another contact for a future opportunity in my life. How about if the local area needed someone with her talents to create a video to bring attention to a new project, a community need or a local celebration? The old, "I know somebody," comes to mind. Contacts.
You see, you have contacts, you have influence and you have the ability to make the unexpected happen. It may not be at your hands, but you may be the conduit that initiates the event. Think outside of your routine box and see what amazing things you can create. My total investment of time in this event was about two hours over two months. I linked the retailer, the school and the local media together to create an event that I am only playing a peripheral role in now. I have a local reporter who calls me regularly to get market updates. I called him as soon as this surfaced and asked if would like a "feel good" story. He jumped on it. The kids will get exposure. The school will get exposure for its role in helping the kids and the retailer will get exposure for their generosity. Influence. Contacts. Results.
