Thankful the Mid-Terms are Over!

Real Estate Agent with GreatWest Realty DRE# 00827565

It is Wednesday morning, after the mid-term elections.  No matter the outcome, I am thankful it is at least over.  In all the years I have shuffled across this land, this has been the most contentious of mid-terms coming to memory.  Am, I glad it’s over?  You betcha!

However, it gives pause to consider deeper things going on in our country right now.  The Special Counsel, Mueller, is continuing his investigation into whether or not the Russians interfered with the integrity of our election.  And, awhile back, we witnessed Mark Zuckerberg appearing before Congress, regarding any part Facebook may have played in disseminating fake ads from questionable sources to also play part in swaying the 2016 electorate!

With those two events in mind, a third element has entered my thoughts which should be considered.  Many times during this election cycle, we were bombarded with political ads almost non-stop, with vitriolic content from the candidates themselves and their campaigns, which were filled with innuendo, half-truths and outright lies about their opponents. This misinformation was disseminated in order to manipulate and garner your vote.  Candidates from both political parties seemed guilty of this.

Someone please explain how it is alright for candidates to act in this way, if it is criminal for Russia and Facebook to be guilty of doing so.  It seems it most certainly should be egregious for political candidates to import a lack of integrity into the voting process!

This morning, while considering Russian interference in light of our own political campaign ads, I couldn’t help be reminded of a quote from cartoon character, Pogo.  Pogo said, “We have met the enemy, and he is us!”

Still, with all these exhausted thoughts rattling around in my head, I am grateful for this moment when these midterms are over.  Am I hopeful we won’t be hammered with 2020 campaign ads beginning tomorrow?  You betcha!

Barbara and Dorte - I think the country is experiencing a state of political exhaustion.  We need a break from the 24/7, 365 day a year campaign mode.

Good morning Myrl. I hear you and I understand. The quote is so appropriate and that is sad.

Hi Myrl:

I hear you and agree!  The lack of civility has become so disappointing, and such a distraction to honest discussion about how to agree to manage our country.

I'm ready for a (long) period of silence from the politicians!

Good morning, Myrl --- I think that the world is better off overall because of the technological advances that have been made but sometimes think of times(not that long ago) when there was television coverage on more limited outlets --- thank goodness I still know how to find the "off" switch.

We did not watch or read ads.  We have cut cable, and only subscribe to shows we want to watch without commercials.  It costs a bit more, however our mental health and sanity is worth so much more.

Vitriolic talk is so despicable---that is a form of hate speech that many think is OK!  I rest my case!

Gabe Sanders - I have already heard stirrings of them too!  There needs to be a law!

William Feela - As long as the special interests run the show, I fear good sense will be missing in action.  It seems we are locked into a realm of the lunatic fringes of the Democommies and the Republinazis.

Linda Piper - I couldn't agree with you more.  It's all a distraction for what they are really doing, or more importantly, what they aren't doing.

Michael Jacobs - The wonderful thing about living in America, is that we still have the freedom to switch channels, or turn the darn thing off.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel - Like you, I have cut the cord on cable.  However, I do watch a few network shows via antenna, but I'm really grateful for my Netflix subscription.

Thom Abbott - I doubt it will be 6 months.  I hear rumblings already!

I am so glad that they are over, the political slander that is in our faces nonstop is frustrating.  I will have to check to see if those I voted for won.

Brian England - What I fear most is the political industrial complex has come to a point where it believes it must divide us as a nation, in order to raise campaign funds for party coffers.  How can we partially change that?  One way might be to overturn "Citizens United," which was implemented in 2010, and the campaign cycles began being pumped up on steroids 24/7, 365 days a year.

I am so glad they are over too. I resorted to watching all my TV on DVR so I could speed through the commercials. So tired of it all.

You know what I enjoyed, Myrl? Well, it certainly wasn't the Midterms, LOL, and all those text messages bombarding us from every direction. It was the fact in Hawaii on Big Island the candidates did NOT smear each other.
