The Best Times of Year For Home Renovation Projects

Does it make a difference what time of year you remodel your home? In reality, the right time to remodel is when you're ready.

Yet some times are better for different phases of a remodel, and can make a difference in costs. Here are a few guidelines to help keep your remodel on target to get the most from cost and timing.

Spring

Spring is typically a busier time for builders, so you may pay more during this time of year for time and materials.

But this is also a good time of year to plan for projects like decks, patios and outdoor rooms. Not only is the ground softer for digging, but you'll be ready to enjoy your deck during the the coming summer months.

Summer

Summer is a good time for kitchen or bath remodeling, since it's in a cooler part of the house than an upstairs remodel. Summer is also a better time for roofing projects, to most people's surprise. This is because the roofing material needs certain higher temperatures to seal.

If you vacation in summer or have a summer home, it’s great to plan your remodeling effort for when you and your family will be away. You can avoid all the unpleasant inconveniences of living with a renovation and come back to a brand new addition. The only downside is not being able to monitor the progress of your builders as closely as you could if you were living in the home during the remodel.

Remodeling October through December

Of course, as we come to the close of the year, most people are thinking about the holidays, so this may not be the best time for you to start a project. Most contractors are scrambling to get projects done by the end of the year, and this could lead to mistakes or lower quality work.

On the other hand, it may be a slower time for contractors who've wrapped up other projects, so they may be less expensive as the year comes to a close. However, shipping may take longer, so work those extra days into your time frame.

Timing concerns for any remodeling project

In general, wet weather is the least desirable for any kind of remodeling. Interior work can take place any time, once the building is under cover.

I agree that the fall/winter months are probably the best time. After the first of the year things get busy as the spring season approaches.
