The Mills is a historic development that combines living space, business space, dining, a brewing incubator and entertainment over a large campus. Depending on what you are looking for, you might just find it at the Mills. This old cotton mill was established in 1818 and was in operation until the 1990s. The Mills proper offered cottages for the workers, mail service, banking and more. Located at the dam on the Tar River, the mills used the falls to generate it's own power.
Capitol Broadcasting Company purchased Rocky Mount Mills and the surrounding village and began a restoration project of the mill buildings and the mill village homes. The cottages have the same exterior as originally built, but the insides are completely new. There will also be loft apartments in the main building. You will find a bee hive, sidewalks and coming soon a Tiny House Hotel as well as a community center for the residents.
During the day, you will find people on campus as it is home to several businesses with more awaiting their completed office space. In the evenings, you will find people, young and old here enjoying dinner at the restaurants, partaking of a local craft beer or just talking with others that have come out to the Mills. As I said, the Mills is pet-friendly (except in the restaurants) and offers water bowls and pet clean up stations throughout the campus.
So whether you have a little time or looking for a fun evening, The Rocky Mount Mills will surely fit the bill. Who knows, you may find me in one of those rocking chairs overlooking the bier garden or finding something good at a food truck.
