How Feng Shui informs small and large scale construction in China

We have all heard about Feng Shui by now.  It is a pseudoscience developed by the Chinese, based on natural energy and earth/star orientation to induce harmony and happiness.  Several years ago I read about Feng Shui experts directing their clients away from purchasing houses and high rise buildings if they did not orient correctly to the compass, roads, mountains, rivers, and other natural features.

I have designed one house in Austin, Texas using principles of Feng Shui and there are several designers here on AR that apply the principle to interiors.

Here is a video illustrating the idea of Feng Shui (which means literally wind/water) as imposed on the modern cityscape of Hangzhow.

Feng Shui will direct exactly where the front door of a house should be located, how a stairway should be oriented (not facing the street as good fortune will pour out), where beds should be placed, that a view through a house is not good practice, balance of all elements by weight, the types of materials to use, the inclusion of natural features for shade and scale, etc.

Caring expertise...knowledge for you!

The Vashtu concept from India is very similar...seems, really, to be common sense about comfortable placements.

John, a dear friend (also an agent) wanted to buy a house here in DC - the smallest house in a neighborhood of mansions.  It was adorable, well-priced, and she had both an home inspector (who pronounced it unusually sound) and a Feng Shui expert at the inspection.  The Feng Shui lady looked at the place and said that she would not make money or have sex again if she lived in this place.  She passed!

Li Read I have not read about Vashtu, but now I am curious.  Maybe you can post something about that!  Thanks

Patricia Kennedy Hello Patricia, there are a LOT of stories like yours that I've heard and really wonder about the entire concept.  The people I designed for had a near fatal accident a few months after the house was completed.  Bones were broken and steel pins had to be used to mend.

They built on a hill of limestone and after a few strong rains water seeped out of the stone that was cut away and left the lot under water!

I was greeted months earlier one day by an ebullient homeowner who had just returned from their Feng Shui consultant in Houston anxious to show me something very important.  I had been redesigning the plans over and over again.  But now, they were perfect.  The husband took out a blueprint of the plan that was glued to foam board.  On the blueprints were arrows and lines that pointed to the center of the house.  He picked up the board and balanced the entire plan on his finger located at the center point of the plan.   He claimed it was now perfect...  I was astonished, perplexed, and angry at the same time.  I was speechless.

Here is a rendering of the house -- they now live happily ever after:

Morning John.

I looked up Feng Shui, from what I've read it goes back to 4000 BC.  Interesting

John Henry - The next time I'm in Austin, I would love to see that house you designed.

For many buyers in my area, Feng Shui is serious business. I spent about a year helping one client find the perfect Feng Shui house. Of course, even after she identified it, she took a trip to Vietnam and Korea to get a compass. I thought it was the size of something small enough to put into her purse. It turned out to be very big and heavy! Although the house met her needs, she refused to move in until her bedroom was repainted. Then, she had someone else go inside to make sure the color was right because she didn't want to experience any bad energy. Thought you might like to see this car I saw in Dallas on display from Japan. I wouldn't exactly call it Feng Shui but thought it was interesting.

Patricia Feager Hi Patricia, glad you liked the video.  I didn't realize how many people are interested in Feng Shui.  I do like the car, outrageous colors and don't know that if i had a Porsche I could do this.  Here is another famous one:

John Henry - I think people have to be either very open to the idea of Feng Shui or spend the time to become educated in its history. I discovered not all who profess to be who they say they are, i.e., the expert are honest.

I like both cars but I would lean towards the one I shared with you more. The one from the Royal BC Museum reminds me of embroidery patterns I saw in Chicago homes by my friends houses who came from the Ukraine.

Nonetheless, I'd have to be crazy to drive it anywhere other than in a parade.
