There is an old saying here in Washington, DC: “If you want a friend, get a dog!”
Whether you live in Washington, DC or Washington, North Carolina, this is great advice - and I followed it.
Willie the Labradoodle was a little, wee puppy when I first began to blog on ActiveRain. Now, eleven years later, he is a geezer doggy - about 77 in dog years. That's older than I am!
During this time, he has been a wonderful companion, has out lasted several guys and one engagement, helped me to prospect for business during our not-often-enough walks, and has been a best friend.
While dogs don't get wrinkles or crows feet, Willie is starting to show his age. He has a hard time climbing stairs unless there is a serious emergency - like the kid next door shooting off fireworks. He doesn’t chase the cat very much, and he chews socks and pot holders a lot less often than he used to, though he still loves gloves.
But he still guards the house from unwanted intruders and lets me know then the mailman or FedEx delivery shows up. And the wag in his tail is still as energetic as the day he moved into my house!
But the best part? He is really glad to see me when I get home, and he makes it seem like it’s more than anticipation of getting fed.
Now, some readers might think it's sort of pathetic to have a furry significant other, but he's so much easier to live with than any human - even though he just ate some fingers out of my favorite gloves!
