Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library, Winterthur, Delaware
Dolores and I like to take day trips and I frequently mention our destinations in blog posts. One of the places I often mention is Longwood Gardens, in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. However, there are several other special travel destinations in the area. I am thankful that we are members and have made many visits to Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library which is not far from Longwood Gardens and is located in the western suburbs of Wilmington, Delaware. Click on the link to view the website and to plan your visit.
We always try to visit Winterthur for Yuletide at Winterthur which will be open for holiday tours from November 17, 2018 through January 2, 2019.
Each delightful room on this year’s Yuletide Tour tells a story reflecting the ways in which Americans have celebrated the winter holiday season from the 1800s to the present. Other decorations and displays recall H. F. du Pont’s family traditions during Christmas and New Year’s at Winterthur—including the family Christmas tree, glittering with glass ornaments and fringed by baskets brimming with gifts, one for each family member.
Plan to spend several hours during your visit. You will want take the mansion tour and spend a lot of time in the outstanding museum. And, you will have the opportunity to stop for snacks and lunch in the on site facilities. You will surely find some gift items in the museum shops.

Almost 60 years ago, collector and horticulturist Henry Francis du Pont (1880–1969) opened his childhood home, Winterthur, to the public. Today, Winterthur (pronounced “winter-tour”) is the premier museum of American decorative arts, with an unparalleled collection of nearly 90,000 objects made or used in America between about 1640 and 1860. The collection is displayed in the magnificent 175-room house, much as it was when the du Pont family lived here, as well as in permanent and changing exhibition galleries.
Winterthur is set amidst a 1,000-acre preserve of rolling meadows and woodlands. Designed by du Pont, its 60-acre naturalistic garden is among America’s best, with magnificent specimen plantings and massed displays of color. Graduate programs and a preeminent research library make Winterthur an important center for the study of American art and culture.
