Unusual Sighting of Kona Critters in Hawaii

By
Real Estate Agent with Lyon Real Estate BRE #00697006

This is unusual for me to see because I don't live in a neighborhood in Sacramento that is overrun by wild turkeys or black witch moths. In fact, I had never seen a black witch moth before in my life until I spotted this huge insect thing attached to our lanai. I am very cognizant, or at least I try to be cognizant, of critters that appear out of nowhere.

High alert, I call it. Because you never know when a fat cockroach will run across the floor or a lizard will fall on your head or you might step on a humongous slug barefoot.

Nobody really wears shoes if they don't have to, but there is a good reason, in many cases, to have shoes on your feet. Shoes give you the opportunity to quickly squash the baby geckos, which emerge without warning from under warm places. So, with that I bring you today's blog: Black Witch Moth and Wild Turkeys in Kailua-Kona.

William Feela I never saw any wild turkeys much less black witch moths when I lived in Minneapolis. I would say maybe it's because I wasn't cognizant of moths, regardless of enormous size, but you can't miss a band of turkeys marching down the street.

Elizabeth- I didn't realize just how big that moth was until you pointed out the Christmas lightbulb to the left!  The thing is huge. We used to have a stuffed turkey in flight over our mantle. It was from Larry's hunting days and each time we moved the crate they built for it got larger. The turkey was dead and yet the crate kept getting larger and larger!!! ($$$)

Eek all those creatures would have me definitely wearing shoes and looking here and there. Beautiful turkey photo.

Elizabeth, the last time I saw a Wild Turkey was when I was living in Austria in the Alps and I was around 12 years old.... needless to say that was a long time ago, so it brought back some great memories, Endre

We had a guy down the street that had some turkeys a while back that used to get loose and on the streets.  They didn't last long.

The turkeys, not the HOA. Lol, lol.

As for your home in paradise, it sounds so wonderful until I  hear about something scurrying around at night in the bedroom. That would just not fly in my world. I cannot sleep if I suspect even the tinest of insects is possibly nearby. Love nature, but don't to share a bedroom with anybody but Bernie and Mac. :)

Elizabeth, laughing to start with, but would definitely be wearing shoes, don't want to step on a slug or a cockroach!

Kathy Streib What am I missing? I fail to see how a dead turkey can require a larger crate every time you move it.

Debbie Reynolds I am often grateful that I wear sandals in the house. Anything on the floor, I tend to swat with a flyswatter first, if I can.

Endre Barath, Jr. See, now you told me something I did not know. Who knew there were wild turkeys in the alps in Austria? Are they taking over the world?

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD Well, I haven't actually had anything jump on me at night that I know of. But I did find dead cockroaches under the bed, and sometimes geckos poke their heads out of the air vent over the bed. So my imagination can run wild.

Joan Cox Well, I did go barefoot in the rain to grill dinner outside, and that's a bad time to go barefoot because the slugs are a plenty. And yes, I squished one under my toes. Ick, ick, ick.

Hi Elizabeth,  The turkey doesn't look the least bit worried that it is this close to Thanksgiving...wonder whose table he'll end up on.

Don't know if I ever saw a wild turkey up close and personal, Elizabeth. Critters running across ones floors reminds me of when I lived in Abu Dhabi. Saw my fair share of them and hated it!
