Ask An Ambassador: You Better Duck!!!

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Elite 513.520.5305 www.LizTour.com SAL.2002007747

I was tempted to come out swinging!

The comments irritated me, and I don't generally irritate easily.

To paraphrase:

We're better than YOU.  All you (fill in the blank) are bad for our profession.  There's no way YOU can be professional unless you fit OUR definitions.  It's impossible unless YOU DO BUSINESS JUST LIKE I DO!!!  (paraphrasing may or may not represent what they actually meant with the comments)

Now you can take your pick of any number of categories to fill in the blank above and you'll see similar dialogues and accusations:

  • part-timers (whatever THAT term actually means) vs. full time agents
  • "Discount" brokerages vs "full service" brokerages
  • Pro-Z vs. Anti-Z

Take your pick, any of those topics might as well be just another political discussion on the Internet, because you've got just about the same odds of changing someone's mind.

You'll get the same arguments rolled out again and again (don't believe me, just go in the NAR FB group and type ANYTHING regarding Zillow in a post and watch the usual transpire from there...but be prepared to lose a day responding).

So while some of the comments irritated me, I didn't respond to any of them individually.  What would have been the point?  Was I going to change their minds? (maybe...but a very small maybe).  And in doing so I might have burned some bridges, or maybe tarnished the Ambassador's title (and yes, I DO consider that with my interactions here).

We're told the Internet is forever and I do remember the more extreme reactions I've read from people over the years, and just deleting the comments after the fact doesn't erase the memories others have of how you acted.

Naaaaahhhhhh, better to save my energy for something really important.  Keep the focus on what makes my phone ring.  Another market report written and posted.

Next....

I haven't spent enough time here lately, so don't know which posts/comments have you upset. However, I do know that sometimes it's hard to just ignore them and move on.

I remind myself that negativity is bad for both body and spirit, so tell myself "Don't go there."

Meanwhile, I'm grateful for the AR community and for the fact that there isn't a whole lot of that here.

The one I dislike the most about the internet happenings you speak of is being painted... not just with a broad brush but more like the paint bucket being poured over on your side of the room... "THEY ALL". Honestly I can't think of a single "group by label" set of people who are identical except dead.  All dead people are dead.  But all republicans or democrats don't all share belief systems,  even all Christians don't fit nicely into a box,  all full time agents don't fit in the same bill, all discount brokerages are not the devil.  And I'm really not sure why people just continue to see that way as opposed to judging people based on that person's behavior.  I know what kind of agent you are and I also know I would not hesitate to refer a client to you.

And I believe the absolute worst thing about the internet is that it allows bullies to say thins they would never ever say to someone's face.

I have to say as someone who wrote a post about the Zestimate today before seeing your post, I am lucky I did not get more bashing comments. I have a different opinion of it where although its is most often wrong, it drives a great deal of new clients to me. When buyers, sellers or just those looking check out a Zestimate, some are high, some low  and many are confused. It is a great conversation starter where just knowing about Z, knowing my local values, I can explaon what it is, what it means and what to do about it. That gets me new clients. Instead of complaining they steal buyers from listings and gove the leads to those who pay, I use it to get my own leads by simply learning how they function and ho wit affects us.

The Q&A section seems to be less civil and harsh in some cases Bill. Each of us has an opinion if we care to share it but some use emotion to drive them. When a question is asked and I am able to add value, I answer honestly and respectfully as possible.

Back in the olden days... the school of thought was to only hire full time agents.

Now days part time versus full time is not the same as it was in the old days

with the advent of technology computers, lap tops, smart phones ect...some agents rarely even come into an office. You dont write contracts on 3 layers of carbon copy with a buyer then hunt down the seller or sellers agent

You can send a contract have it docusigned and everyone signed off in 15 minutes.

Life has changed We have evolved. Part time agents can do more now in less time than full time agents could do back then. Everyone makes their own path and then they get to follow that path at their own speed in their own time.

It's just not the same as it once was. It is better

A person shows wisdom in knowing when to either not engage - or disengage - from a futile online debate. I would ventue to say that the people who "have enough free time" to debate back and forth all day on trivaal matters, probably make less money than those who avoid them.

In other news, you have inspired me to write a blog post about "part time" agents.

Liz and Bill Spear ~ I hear you loud and clear -no matter what and at all costs, we're better off not swinging away!

That said, I am thankful for the "members only" area. I feel it is important to discuss pertinent topics ie. ZG (regardless of disagreement). It is nice to have an outlet to vent. And it is even nicer to get feedback whether it's agreeing or not (IMO).

One of my favorite things about AR is the civility. It is amazing to think of all the different points of views we have here on this platform. Hundreds of thousands of members from state to state with varying opinions and somehow most all of us manage to do it without swinging for a knockout

Hi Bill:  When we look at one day as an example, we can receive 20 compliments and one horrific put-down. What do we remember?????  Your attitude is great. You have more important places to put your attention. Plus you are very respected here, so please remember those lives where you do make a difference.

Hi Bill, your graphic certainly got my attention!  I suspect we all find outselves in situations on a regular basis where we want to speak what's truly on our minds. Agree it's better to direct your energy in a positive direction.

Wow I'm glad I missed it.    I understand the knee jerk reaction to defend when wrongly pidgeon holed.     But as a recent cancer survivor, I've got the perfect excuse to tell someone I don't have then energy to engage about that right now.    It's actually a nice card to be able to play - I've earned pretty much everyone's respect and no one can argue with me!    Amazing what being bald or just out of surgery (pick a #) and still working did for my image around town.    Someday I'll be able to blog about it but it's still too raw.

Liz and Bill Spear   You closed your post with the best advice ever.    Save your energy! -  for whatever you feel is more important to you.

Hi Bill- you are very good at keeping your cool as are many others here. The point you made is that we all have memories and whether we like it or not, someone may choose not to work with you because of one comment you made.

Over the past bunch of years, the best thing that's happened to the real estate profession is the new choices with business models.  It's about whatever works for any individual agent! And yeah, it's worse than talking politics sometimes!
