My Love of Nature...Thanks To My Father

Real Estate Agent with Premier Property Sales & Rentals RS284559

It is because of my father that I love and appreciate nature.

I remember at an early age going for rides to Valley Forge Park with my dad and being let out of the car with a few of my siblings and just running, running, running down hills and in the woods and sledding down snow banks in winter, and walking in the woods while leaves were falling. These outings were usually done without my mother, she was home cooking for our large family. My dad was getting us out and spending quality time with us since he had limited time to do this working two jobs.

Morning Glories in SunWhile riding in the car with my father he would point out the crops in the fields as we drove by rows of soy beans, cornfields and wheat fields, and he would also get upset when he saw the farmland disappearing and nothing being done to conserve green space.

Most Sunday's we would visit my dad's sister who lived on five acres of land in Point Pleasant, Bucks County. The back half of her property was wooded and had a pond out of sight in the neighboring woods. Another place to enjoy nature until it was time to go home after dark.

We would go to Elmwood Park Zoo to see the ducks and caged animals, and then go to the neighboring playground to slide down slides and swing on swings in a wooded park with grass and dirt all around, no asphalt.

During all these outings my dad would be happy in these settings. There would be no fighting or yelling. There was always happiness and a love of being outdoors.

In nature there were wide open spaces enough for all of us to run and feel free.

There were things to discover, things to point out to each other.

So it was those outings with my father that taught me to love nature, to be in nature, as a way to find happiness, to escape from the tightness of living with eight other people, in a brick row home, with one bathroom with no sink, on a street with tight small yards with only a few trees in neighboring yards. Where parking was tight and caused problems with neighbors.

It is because of my dad's need to be outdoors that I too took on that need.

I have fond memories of these outings with my father, they are etched in my memory, and I am forever grateful for this gift he gave to me.  Thank you Dad!

My Dad was not like that but he did like to hunt and fish which he did primarily with my brother who is the Natty Bumpo of the family.

Thank hou Steffy Hristova . That photo with the sun was pure luck with the timing.

Thank you Sharon Lee .  There are a few straggler trees with leaves still on, but very wilted.  We had a few nights below freezing and some potential snow on the way.  Wishing you a great week also, where ever you are!

Thank you Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089 . I am glad you enjoyed reading this post. I too enjoyed that ride into the past as I wrote this post.

Gosh Myrl Jeffcoat Thank you for the Feature.  Those sunflowers were a treat.  I actually was able to get them to full bloom in my garden before the squirrels or woodchuck got to them.

Gloria, I'm ALL OVER this! Such beauty and passion in your photos, your story, your memories. I loved this so much! Glad to see that your photos got *featured* in Myrl Jeffcoat 's group.

I lived five minutes from Valley Forge Park way back in '79, so I know what you're talking about. Such rich history there, too. I recall having this monumental moment while standing there when I felt drawn back in time for a few seconds actually feeling and visualizing the soldiers. It was eery and magical at the same time. That memory has never left me!

Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Real Estate Thank you.  Yes Valley Forge has that impact. Even more so in the cold of winter.  It must have been horrid for all involved.  You were there right after the re-routing of roads in the park for the bicentennial.
