Cruise Ship Boarding Day: Auckland to Tauranga

By
Education & Training with U.S.: I specialize in helping agents who have been in the business 2 years or less create a thriving business.

"Good girls don't drink and drive. They sip and sail."

On boarding day for our 13-day cruise around New Zealand & Australia, we left the hotel in Auckland about 9:30 and headed to the port to get checked in and settled into our cabin.  Of our group of 10 (5 cabins), there were 6 of us (3 cabins) that arranged to have adjoining mini-suite cabins. So, we were able to open our deck doors and have one long deck and easy access to each other.

After everyone was boarded, we were scheduled to be at sea all day on our way to the port at Tauranga.  Other than a mandatory Safety Meeting to teach us what to do in an emergency, this gave us all day to get unpacked and organized in our cabins and explore the lay out of the ship.  The newest Princess ship Majestic is huge.  It accommodates 3560 guests and 1346 crew members. It has 19 decks, is 1083 feet long, and 224 feet high.  The 5th, 6th and 7th, 16th and 17th decks are solely dedicated to entertainment, shopping, dining and beverage services.  I never got below the 5th deck. As near as I can figure, that's where the crews living quarters were.

As we boarded, we were greeted by this large and lovely Piazza which is, literally, in the center of the ship and open to the 5th, 6th and 7th floors.  This is where there was ongoing entertainment throughout the days and into the evenings.  The entertainment alternated throughout the day, with a theme each evening.   We would often stand on the 6th or 7th floor railing and listen to the live bands play and watch the couples dance.  I always enjoy watching couples who have obviously danced together for a long time.

View from my cabin deck. Doesn't get any better than this.

I discovered on a cruise, each guest is assigned to a dinner table that you will sit at each evening for the entire cruise.  We were fortunate to get all 10 of us at one table, which was right by the window.  Every evening at dinner we were able to watch the sunset. How awesome is that?  We arranged for the early dinner time so we could make it to the early show entertainment each evening.  Every day had lots of activity options, even more so on the "at sea" days.  I can't even begin to list them all.  This first evenings main theatre entertainment was a salute to Freddie Mercury and the music of Queen.  That was fun.

After enjoying the evening entertainment, we headed for one of the many onboard bars and had a nightcap.  We were booked on a "Sip & Sail" cruise which meant all of our drinks were included in our package, and we didn't waste any time trying to get our monies worth.

We sailed through the night and arrived in the Port of Tauranga, New Zealand early a.m., when we were able to get out and explore.

Morning Carol.

I have always wanted to take a cruise.  The boss on the other hand won't hear of it.  She gets car sick, I can't imagine her on a ship rocking

Carol, I have never taken a cruise and am always amazed at how big the ships are. They're like floating cities. Sounds like a great time and how fun that you could open your deck doors and have one long deck to be able to enjoy with your friends.

Good morning Carol. Nothing like a cruise, especially years ago when communication with the mainland was near impossible. Glad you enjoyed it!

Other than the fact that your cellphone died on this trip, I can see that you had a wonderful trip.  "Good girls don't drink and drive.  They sip and sail."  I love that line.

Hi James Dray ,
Some of our gals get seasick too but they wore a special patch behind their ear that did the trick.  Perhaps your wife could give it a try. It might open up her world to some new adventures.

Hi Joyce Marsh, Daytona Beach Florida ,
What has been your favorite cruise so far, Joyce?  I'm considering another next year but probabluy closer to home this time.  Those plane trips to and from are killer.

Hi Ron and Alexandra Seigel ,
Yes, it was. Just getting my bearings on the ship, though, took a few days.

Wow Carol,  fun times for sure.  Can you hit golf balls off the back of the ship?  That would keep your game up!

Cruising is the best of all worlds. I love the idea of doing it with so many friends. There is never any lack of things to do on a cruise ship. What fun.

Thanks for sharing your trip details!

I took my first non-Navy cruise in October on Symphony of the Seas in the Western Med.  Just like your ship, amazing how big it was and how much was packed into it!  We had the late dinner schedule, and after full days of sightseeing, my mom and I skipped out on the entertainment shows.  I've not been to Down Under, although Liz visited New Zealand years ago with her family.  I've always heard there are some great places down there to visit.

Hi Carol: I have taken so many cruises but nothing like the Crystal Cruise from Lisbon to Barcelona several years ago. That was a bit over the top, actually, and I would have had just as much fun without a butler, without a penthouse suite and a Jacuzzi. They make the upgrades sound so spectacular but as long as I'm mid-ship, I don't care too much which deck I'm on. It's not worth the extra $$.

I think our February cruise New Zealand / Australia is on Viking. Never been on a Princess ship. Can't wait to see more photos.

Oh, how fun is that, Carol?! Your description makes me so ready to get our next cruise booked. Because of the adaptability of cruises, they are our best vacations! Like you, we do the sip and sail - always! We also opt for the open dinner planning but, how wonderful that you were able to get all 10 of your group together at one table...and a window table at that!

Glad you enjoyed your vacation - love the pictures too, Carol!
