We love to garden and grow food, which is very easy to do in Haiku Maui. It's nice to have friends who share this passion, and bring us new plants to try. Over the years we have incorporated a lot of great herbs into our gardens.
From right to left: chili peppers; oregano; turmeric; my chickens!
Mike brought us Hawaiian chili peppers which are probably some of the hottest peppers you can find. They are very small and grow all year round on the bush, so there's always an abundance of these fiery little gems ready for picking. How much do you really need anyway? I use them in green papaya salad mostly, and they're also great for making chili pepper water which is simply crushed up peppers in some salt and water... instant hot sauce.
Lance brought us a small cutting of oregano many years ago and it's been thriving in a dry spot (yes such a thing exists in Haiku) next to the chili peppers. I love this plant and use it almost every day, especially since I learned that oregano has a lot of health benefits. The fresh leaves are so much nicer than the dried product from the store.
Turmeric roots grown in Haiku Maui HI
Lee gave us turmeric, when we had no idea what to do with it. The small orange roots were something we had never seen, but be took his word for it and grew some in the ground and in pots, to discover a wonderful new herb which also has incredible health benefits. It grows so well in fact that any small pieces that remain in the ground will grow a whole new plant. Needless to say, it now comes up with every new garden tilling, and we encourage it. The fresh roots can be grated into soups, stews, salads, smoothies etc. I add it to banana muffins and carrot cake and you really don't even notice it there. Some say it's a super antioxidant.
Every day I think of these friends who shared their bounty with us, and we do the same by sharing and giving to others who are new to Haiku.
