Wordless Wednesday: Green Sea Turtles in Maui

Green Sea Turtles in Maui

We discovered these 10 green sea turtles (aka Honu) on a small rocky beach at Makena Landing near Wailea, Maui on our trip several weeks ago. We never would have seen them without the help of a fellow tourist who pointed out this hidden area where they were resting. We were about 20 feet away from them. Honu are protected by both state and federal laws.

Hi Bob "RealMan" Timm

The largest one was about 3 feet long (shell only). It was really cool to see them on land - in the past we have just seen them swimming in the water. That's neat too, but hard to photograph.

Hi Gwen Fowler-CRS- 864-638-3599 SC Mountains & Lakes--  Thanks for stopping by. It was such fun to see them. If this tourist had not told us where they were we never would have seen them since it was a small hidden area. Very cool!

Jeff,

Love the honus, we have seen them while snorkeling, and when they dive, they look like angels.  One came up to my snorkel to look at me...Years ago we stayed at a resort in Kona during the 4th of July.  They have an enclosed area to keep the babies safe, and on the 4th they open the waterway to the ocean as they are big enough.  A

I love honu (all turtles really)! They are so graceful in the water. It is pretty neat that you photographed them on land.

Those look like some pretty big turtles, Jeff. But I don't pretend to know anything about turtles in general.

Hi Ron and Alexandra

What fun that must have been to see them while snorkeling! We haven't seen babies yet, but did see what appear to be young ones swimming.

Hi Libby Cousins

It was such a treat to see them on the beach. They were all pretty much just lying there but we did get to see one come up on the beach from the water - fun to see. I was surprised at how big some of them are.

Hi Nina Hollander

Well I certainly don't know much about them either, big ones or little ones! But we were thrilled to see that that close up!

Hi Sheri Sperry - MCNE®

It was really fun to see them up close (well, 20 feet that is) and not in the water. I was surprised at how large some of them are.

Hi Jeff- what a lucky photo opportunity!!!   Glad you got to see them! We would often see them when we were out on our boat but they didn't hang around for long.

Grant Schneider Indeed, we felt very fortunate to see them that close and on land instead of swmming. I told some other people about them, too, so they could enjoy them.

Hi Kathy Streib

We've seen them swimming when at the beach in HI but this was the best. They are fun to see swimming, but up sorta close and personal was a treat.
