Branding Moment: Does Your Tag Line Make Sense?

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Napa Consultants DRE00893924

If you are going to invest in creating a tag line for your luxury or any other branch of real estate practice, you have to make sure your tag line makes sense.  Pictured above is a maintenance van filled with tools with this tag line, "Short Term Rentals, Long Memories"as we were driving to our class.  We were both puzzled by this one,

What does it mean?  Usually people have long memories when their place was trashed by renters.  Is this truck on its way to remedy a disaster?  As we passed the van, we were able to see the brand name.

The brand and the message are not congruent.  We have an acquaintance who rented a beautiful home on the beach for a family vacation.  This is where his wife decided to announce she wanted a divorce!  He would never book a stay there again.

Compare this with the Fed Ex tag line:  The world on time! or Nike's, "just do it!"  You don't have to think and figure it out.  It just makes sense.

From a personal point of view, we love staying in nice places when we travel.  Although a nice place is part of the memory of a vacation, what takes priority in our album of memories is the location.   The place we stay at is secondary at best  to the joys and adventure of the destination.

When you come up with a tag line, make sure it is congruent with the brand and its focus.   Give it a stress test, if it passes use it, if it does not forget it!  Perhaps you will realize your do not need one!

Buy and Sell Real Estate with Confidence

Good morning (:
Since I rented my wedding dress - I first thought the tag line was for a tuxedo/dress company
Great suggestions on how to create a tag line and/or evaluate your current one.  Mine is a little long, but it shares my focus - "Buy and Sell Real Estate with Confidence" and it follows my company name "Buy and Sell Oklahoma LLC"
Now off to view your video about how to tell someone about myself in 30 seconds!
Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for sharing your observations and advice.

When I opened my first office in the summer of 1961, my tag line was "C. Roy Kelley when you need a home or insurance".

When I started, there were no computers, fax machines or cell phones and you carried around a monster listing book (Chicago). You dragged clients around in your vehicle and it took 45+ days to close a transaction - So my tagline was Real Estate Made Easy. It worked, but I may need to make an update because it is much easier now.

David Spencer Thank you for your comment.  That is a wonderful tagline, and give it a stress test, it may still work today.  A

Hello Alexandra and Ron - a "tag line" should  clearly be "congruent". Confusion/head-shaking is not/should not be the goal. More sights on the road worthy of pondering if not questioning.

Well, I don't know what "Just do it" has to do with shoes, but maybe I'm just dense.

Your post reminded me of a speaker when I attened a copywriter's boot camp a few years ago. The speaker talked about having a slogan or tag line and went on and on about one writer who loved to dance. Her tag line was "The dancing copywriter."

It never made sense to me - what did dancing have to do with creating great copy for her clients?

Marte Cliff  "Just do it1" is an example of subtle marketing/peripheral marketing along with their swoosh logo.   It was emphasizing the fitness benefits, and oh, by the way, we have the shoes to sell you!

Marte on the dancing example, I would not say it has anything to do with copy writing, just like the "gourmet" agent in Napa whose logo was her holding a silver dome!    LOL A

It's probably just me, but I think putting emphasis on something you do that has nothing to do with the job is a bit counter-productive. Do you want your copywriter to be out dancing or your real estate agent to be in the kitchen - when they should be helping you reach your goals?

This is why I discourage my bio clients from emphasizing their love of travel and the number of countries they've visited. Do you really want to use an agent who is apt to have a trip to France scheduled in the middle of your transaction?

Marte Cliff as commercial real estate agents looking for luxury tenants to fill stores and developments, it was an asset to have traveled to those countries that are known for their luxury goods.  And, we never left the country or the state in the middle of an escrow, or in the middle of lease negotiation which could take as long as an escrow with a 25,000 square foot tenant.    In those days airlines were not juggling their prices every day, and you would get a refund without pain.  A
