When I was a teenager I had an older friend who was an art student at Tyler School of Art outside of Philadelphia and because of this friend and the art classes I took in high school I was exposed to the world of art, both of which I am very thankful.
My love of certain art periods and artists are many, but one of my favorite artists is Vincent Van Gogh. He was a troubled soul but had support from a brother who helped him live and pursue his art.
The thing I really like about Van Gogh's creations are his use of bold brilliant colors, blues, and the very thick application of paint. I have seen a few of his paintings up close over the years and I just enjoy being in the room with these paintings. They seem to give me a sense of peace, even though they were painted by a very troubled soul. Van Gogh did most of his work in the last ten years of his short life.
The one painting that really gets me is The Starry Night. I remember when I was a teenager and I saw this painting for the first time in an art book. A sense of calm seemed to take over me as I looked at this image. Starry Night still has that same effect on me today.
I chose this painting as an inspiration for four woven fabrics in college, pieces that complement each other.
Even though Van Gogh was a deeply troubled soul who eventually took his own live, he gifted us with a magical and inspirational treasure that is as inspiring as ever and for this I am truly thankful!
