I am Thankful for my Car

Real Estate Agent WV0026375

Just think if we didn't have a car.  We would have to walk or bike to where we needed to go. As a kid, we never had a car until I was in the 9th grade.  My parents said we didn't need one. We walked everywhere... to elementary school until middle school then we had to ride a school bus. Even then we walked to the bus stop. We walked to the local grocery store and to visit friends. Dad would walk to where his ride would pick him up to go to work in the coal mines. Once every two weeks, my mom would walk to a bus stop to go to town and buy groceries. She returned in a taxi full of groceries....(remember there were 11 children to feed).  This was done twice a month. We never missed not having a car ... until we got one!

Nowdays, we go everyplace in our car even if it is two blocks away.  I think about my childhood days when things were much simpler then.  We would walk for miles and visit our friends, play in the woods, and always home before dark. My siblings and I always enjoyed walking and seeing all that nature had to offer.  Our parents never worried about us.

Times have changed. I have great memories of my childhood. But, today I am thankful for my car.  I couldn't sell real estate without a car, get to my appointments, visit my family that live an hour away, visit friends, go to a movie, go out to dinner and so on.  I guess as a child we didn't need a car.... but I do today!

My first car was a Dodge Dart convertible and had push buttons for gears... it was an amazing car, but was truly a lemon!  My second car was a light blue Ford. Then I had a wonderful fun-loving red Volkswagen convertible; a pumpkin-colored, vinyl top Pontiac with swivel seats; a black Toyota (my first new car); a black Lexus, a white Lexus and now I have an RX Lexus 350....I am sure I left out a few cars in between....can you remember all the cars you have owned.

I am so thankful for my car!

I had a Volkswagen bug (beige) as my first car and many silver, black and white cars since. In fact that last 7 have been white. I love my Subaru. I will probably drive one of those from now on.

Dear Rebecca,

You are so right about this. Good to be able to drive, even if you can walk. If you walk, make sure to wear light clothing or a safety vest, especially in inclement weather.

Really? two blocks and you drive?  We drive everywhere, but for 2 miles there is nothing but neighbors.  When I go to visit my mother in law in a city we walk everywhere ... like a mile to a favorite spot for dinner and 3 miles to the bay.  I love that I have a car, but not sure I would if I ever moved to a city.

We used to do a lot of walking when we were younger also - we walked to friends, the park, the neighbors, the pond, wherever. But I'm very thankful for my car as well...

And yes, I remember every car! My first was a 1973 Chevy Nova w/8 cylinders and 307cc engine. We didn't worry about gas prices/environmental impact then.  The most fun car I ever owned was a Volvo C70 convertible. The best in the snow was/is the Subaru Forester.

Good morning, Rebecca... I grew up without a car. My mother didn't drive ever in her entire life. I didn't own a car until I was 25 years old. When we returned to NYC from overseas in the early 1990's, we lived in NYC without a car. But in a suburban environment like Charlotte, no doubt a car is necessary and something to be grateful for.

I would certainly learn to live without a car, but I definitely don't want to try and do so, haha.

I often think about the freedom that comes with having a car.  I have a friend who suffered a stroke and can no longer drive.  All I can say is thank goodness for Uber.

I've had some really great cars over the years too, and so many wonderful memories.  Now I have a Lexus that is a "smart car".  I love having the safety features combined with the luxury of a Lexus.

It sounds like you are a confirmed Lexus fan. I am so thankful for my car too.  It gives me the freedom to go wherever I want whenever I want.

Rebecca, your post just made me reminisce about the cars I've had. My first one was a lemon too, a Chrysler Sebring and it was in the shop more than it was on the road. I'm thankful for my car too.

You have challenged us to remember our cars! Wow. I remember my very first car was a gray VW Bug. It cost $100 (my dad was a deal finder). I traded with my boyfriend. Can't remember why he agreed to a swap but I definitely got the better of the deal, a gold 1970 Olds Cutlass S.

After that, the memory is fuzzy, but I owned several Oldsmobiles since I worked for the dealership for a while in the 80s. Eventually I also bought a red convertible. It was so much fun but not great for the hair styles! Now I happily drive my RED Mazda, the second one in a row.

I don't have to drive the newest, high end vehicle, but give me solid, reliable transportation. It's a necessity these days.

Oh, goodness, we did survive without them as children but, as adults, I can't imagine not having one, Rebecca! You know, I also had a VW Beetle - sunshine yellow (of course!) and loved that thing.

Happy Monday, Rebecca!
