About a dozen years ago, it dawned on my husband and me and that once we were empty-nesters we wanted a change in life-style. Forty-plus years in the same town, and 35 in the same house - time for a change.
It didn't take us long to realize that leaving suburbia and moving to the heart of San Francisco would be the right choice for us, close to family, close to Gene's engineering job in the Silicon Valley and my business on the Peninsula/Silicon Valley. Being able to tele-commute and for me the flexibility of choosing when to drive would make it all feasible.
In 2009, when the housing market was heading lower, we purchased our condo and rented it out. By 2011, when our tenants gave notice, all children were out of the house and it was our time! No more cleaning gutters! No more being a slave to a big yard!
We've never regretted our move, and enjoy living here as much now as when we first moved in. When we work, we work; when we're home, we play.
I'm grateful for:
- the healthy lifestyle of being able to walk almost anywhere I wish to go - doctors' offices, grocery and drug stores, hardware stores, bookstores, restaurants, office supply stores - they are all at my doorstep
- the ease of going to the symphony, opera, theatre, SFMOMA, Asian Art Museum - no driving and searching for expensive parking; a walk, a Muni bus, an Uber ride gets us quickly to and fro. We can enjoy these cultural icons mid-week or any time we wish
- the multitude of excellent restaurants, especially the neighborhood ones - so many choices! (Green's Restaurant at Ft. Mason is one of our favorites for a special dinner.)
- the friendliness of the neighborhoods - easy to get to know our shopkeepers and service providers
- the open space in The City itself - The Presidio, Golden Gate Park, Lands' End, Sutro Forest. And the beaches! We've explored them all and have our favorite hikes, both short and long.
- the art on display in every neighborhood - tiled staircases, murals, the hearts of San Francisco; all here to enjoy
- the proximity to the Marin Headlands and Mt. Tamalpais - a short 15-minute drive from our place takes us to several trail heads; 30 minutes to many more. This is hiker paradise!
I'm grateful to be living exactly where I am.
