Thank you Kat.

This post is being written as part of Debbie Reynolds' "Thanksgiving Challenge - Post What You Are Thankful For". This is my tenth post, and in this one, I share my thankfulness for ripples.

I read a poem years ago that stayed with me ever since. It was written by James W. Foley and it said:

Drop a pebble in the water; just a splash, and it is gone;

But there's half-a-hundred ripples circling on and on and on,

Spreading spreading from the center, flowing on out to the sea.

And there is no way of telling where the end is going to be.

Drop a pebble in the water; in a minute you forget,

But there's little waves a-flowing, and there's ripples circling yet,

And those little waves a-flowing to a great big wave have grown;

You've disturbed a mighty river just by dropping in a stone.

Drop an unkind word, or careless; in a minute it is gone;

But there's half-a-hundred ripples circling on and on and on.

They keep spreading, spreading, spreading from the center as they go,

And there is no way to stop them, once you've started them to flow.

Drop an unkind word, or careless; in a minute you forget;

But there's little waves a-flowing and there's ripples circling yet.

And perhaps in some sad heart a mighty wave of tears you've stirred,

And disturbed a life was happy ere you dropped that unkind word.

Drop a word of cheer and kindness; just a flash and it is gone;

But there's half-a-hundred ripples circling on and on and on,

Bearing hope and joy and comfort on each splashing, dashing wave

Till you wouldn't believe the volume of the one kind word you gave.

Drop a word of cheer and kindness; in a minute you forget;

But there's gladness still a-swelling, and there's joy a-circling yet,

And you've rolled a wave of comfort whose sweet music can be heard

Over miles and miles of water just by dropping one kind word.

Years ago when my children were young I wrote an essay called "My Legacy" which talked about how teaching my children to be responsible and caring adults was what I wanted my legacy to be. I still do. But now that my children ARE responsible and caring adults, I wonder what else I can leave behind. And the answer for me has to do with ripples.

After I am gone and those who knew me are gone, there won't be anything left of me. A hundred years from now, the name Kat Palmiotti will invoke no response. And I am okay with that. What I want to leave behind though are the impact of positive ripples. I want to be the person who delivers words of "cheer and kindness" that grow into waves of comfort. The things I do could be as small as teaching a skill to a child. Or providing encouragement to someone who needs it. Saying something nice to someone I do not know. Helping someone through a rough patch in their life. Whatever those things are, if I focus the rest of my life on making sure the "pebbles" I throw are positive, while my name may not be known, my actions will hopefully make some small difference that will live on.

I know my life has been shaped by people I never knew. I am sure there are skills that were taught to my great grandparents, and their great grandparents that changed the direction of distant ancestor's lives. And those in turn trickled down through the generations until they got to me. I have grandparents who were hoodlums, got arrested, went to jail, got released, and gave birth to my dad eight and a half months later. My dad never knew about this criminal history and somehow some of the jobs he wound up having as an adult were serving in the air force, being a state trooper, and serving as a catholic deacon. That switch from crime to crime-stopper did not just happen; somewhere along the line someone (and maybe many someones) dropped positive pebbles into my dad's life. Which changed his life. And changed mine. So I am grateful for all the positive ripples that have shaped my life thus far.

And I am looking forward to all those I intend to make.

And with that, I wish everyone a wonderful and happy Thanksgiving!

Anna Banana Kruchten CRB, CRS 602-380-4886 Yes, we can if we make the effort.

I had an ulterior motive in reblogging this. I wanted it where I could find it again to re-read now and then.

I agree Marte Cliff, the smallest pebble (like a person) can make a ripple that can go far out from the origination that affect the water or people around it.
