Up On the Rooftop.....Flake, Flake, Flake...

Lots of discussion these days about energy conservation....ways to reduce heating bills...Thermal imaging for determining heat loss...as well there should be...we just have this one planet at least until there are reservations available for the Moon, Mars, etc. on a regular basis.

In our "four seasons" part of the world...we are subject to snow of any consequence most usually from later November through the end ofFour Seasons March with some years occasionally earlier...and some unexpected...and by that time..very unwelcome, later into April.  I went to school on the Wisconsin/Minnesota border and remember one year it snowed May 1st and I cried for a week !  We always tell our Minnesota friends that we hope that Summer comes  on a weekend this year so they can enjoy it !!

As we do our dashing thru the snow professionally and socially this season...we can tell some people we know...in the simplest way toOur roofdiagnose" whether or not there is insufficient insulation on some part of the house...by looking at the roof. This is the roof of our house, note the even white blanket covering the roof.   That means that there is no heat escaping to melt the snow on the roof...Yaaah insulation is doing its job as it should.

When you go past a house with uneven or no snow on roof and other homes in the area have snow on the  roofs with  "holes" in it...it may be a sign that insulation is needed.

Not as scientific a "study" as you would expect from an expert home inspector...but something to give energy conscious home owners ...a heads UP !

Warm weekend wishes from Sally K. & David L. Hanson, Broker Associates with EXP Realty, honored to be serving southeastern Wisconsin for all things real estate.

Sally and David you also have to be concerned of the attic being to air tight, because if the heat gets trapped in the attic it will cause the plywood in the roof to split.  So it is a delicate balance, you need to keep the heat in the house, but once it makes its way into the attic you need to get it out.

We have that very same "process" only it's frost on the roof not snow.  Frost on the roof means great insulation.  I love my frosty roof.

Hi Sally and David- I'd never really thought of that!!!! But then again, I've only lived in "snow country" for a few years several years ago.

It seems cold here for me right now, but I know it is not nearly as cold here as it is where you live, so I am very grateful.  I need to be warm, haha.

We bought our current house in the spring so this is our first winter in it. I'll have to keep an eye on the snow on the roof. Thanks for the tip!

Your home looks very much like my previous home...the only difference I can see is we had a deck where you have a room on the left side. To the left of entering was our kitchen and to the right was dining. Straight ahead was living room and behind garage was our master.

If it were a little warmer I would take a picture  of the back...looks nothing like

the front because it is fully exposed so appears to be 2 stories with a deck across the whole first floor and the lower level has a patio ...may try that when it warms up Sharon Tara

Sounds even more like mine now that you describe the back.

Sally & David wow that is a great photo and I am so glad I need to check your insulation via a photo. Now, keep in mind, we have insulation in our home too and it keeps the cold and the warm in when it is appropriate, but lucky for me we do not have your blanket to test it with:))Endre

Hi Hansons Both! I so agree with your assessment and what is funny is that when we do get snow each year, I'm always comparing my roof to others around me! Seriously, if the snow stays longer on my house, I feel great about our insulation. Since we only get one or two a year, I make sure I check that. (I think my Dad taught me that years ago!)

A few flakes can make a smile but if you have too many of them, I can be a big mess of snow fury, I suppose.

My dad taught me this lessons years ago, although we rarely get snow, we do get frost occasionally. The same principle applies. Look out for spots; that's where your energy escapes.

P.S.: Stay warm this winter.

Hi Sally and David

Well it's not an issue in our area, but I remember learning about this from a couple of respected inspectors back in the Boston area. We certainly had plenty of snow there.
