Reflections on Anchorage

Our Hearts and Prayers Are with Alaska

Anchorage Sunset

When I heard about the earthquake in Anchorage today, memories flooded back about all the wonderful sights I saw when visiting there. I know they will rebuild but in the meantime, treasures are lost, lives are disrupted and hardships are ahead.

There is much to be thankful for that a tsunami didn't happen and the quake wasn't worse than it was. Buildings and roads can be repaired. Lives were spared.

Dear Debbie,

Definitely! 1964 was a lot worse it seems with a bunch of dwellings sucked into the earth.

Thank you Debbie It is a real miracle there was no loss of life and not real major injuries. It could have been so much worse.  There have been many aftershocks some quite substantial. People are nervous but grateful

Thank you Endre Barath, Jr. for reaching out to ask if I was ok. It was very nice of you and I really appreciate your sincere compassion

we are good for now...

but we know we must always be prepared for the big one

Glad all is well, Debra. Our sister-in-law says it's been very unsettling at their home in Anchorage.

yes Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD and Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI   It is still ongoing for them The aftershocks have been massive and so unnerving. They just keep coming up there.

It seems to be a little better but they are still have aftershocks and no one can relax till those settle down

the Damage is greater than thought at first and with each 5+ aftershock there is room for more damage

Still no loss of life

No Looters

No gouging of products like water

Costco opened doors to everyone and sellingcases of water for 5 bucks.

Debra Leisek - Thank you for the update. I'll continue to hold you and all the people of Alaska in my thoughts and prayers. Although the aftershocks are still shocking and you never know when it will occur, I'm glad to know the people of
Alaska are civil and not acting out in menacing ways to cause additional chaos.

I can believe you when you say, "I love Alaska and Alaskans Very Proud to be part of this state."

Take care, my friend. It's great to hear from you.

Hi Debbie... I saw this on the news (briefly) yesterday. So frightening (we have good friends in Alaska). For some reason it didn't seem a well reported in the news as other similar events.

Debbie Reynolds - Thank you for this heartfelt blog post. I was in different meetings and driving most of the day. Debra Leisek and Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD family was on my mind. It's good to know Debra is okay. I am still concerned about Debb's son and grandchild, who I believe live close to Anchorage, but not sure. It was hard for me to focus when they were on my minds.

My hearts and prayers and thoughts are on Alaska. This was shocking news around the world!

Debbie Reynolds and Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI - It was very upsetting to hear about the quake yesterday. Actually though, my son's family lives in Juneau. However, I do have a sister-in-law in Anchorage. We were able to communicate with her immediately...she said it was scary, but she and her husband are okay. She says the dog was especially traumatized...

On another note, I lived in Juneau when the 1964 quake happened in Anchorage 9.2 ( Imagine)....I was a little girl, but remember being afraid of a tsunami - fortunately we were spared, but it was weird listening to all the radio reports from Anchorage ( for weeks) either confirming loss of live, or hearing names of those identified as safe.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - Thank you so much for letting me know about your family in Alaska. I was really concerned! ActiveRain has a way of making me feel like I'm part of all of your families. I hope you didn't think I was being nosy. Somehow, we are all connected on this great big "blue marble." Even though, we all don't get to set foot on another country, place, city, state, or continent, we're all connecting with others with our stories here on ActiveRain.

I'm glad your sister-in-law in Anchorage is okay. How strange that her dog was "especially traumatized..."  Something triggered something in the dog. I hope he or she is going to be okay. I think it's proof, all creatures on earth have brains, perhaps releasing cortisol and oxytocin, or some type of chemicals that causes stress.

Back in 1964, I was just a kid myself and I can't even imagine what it must have felt like for you to experience the quake of 1964, 9.2! I shiver, just to think of it even more today than back then (around that time) when in Chicago, kids were hiding under their desks because of the Sonic Boom set off by our government during the Cold War.

Natural disasters is something nobody can prepare for and if notified with warning, I'd be one of the first to get out of dodge! I'm guessing, both quakes were without warning?

There are so many people dealing with heartbreak today. It just reinforces, we the people need to come together and stop trying to be right about politics. Although I nearly died a few times in my lifetime, I don't anticipate there being a Government in Heaven. Debb, I'm glad your family members are safe and hope this is the end to aftershocks.

It's good to hear from you and paste an imagine in my head of the cities in Alaska. Thank you.

Debbie Reynolds - Having been to Alaska, at a time when you were on a relaxing vacation, this really must have shook you up too. I hope you keep your good memories alive. Thankfully, to my knowledge there was no loss of life, just tremendous damage to infrastructure. This will obviously cause much inconvenience when road and bridge repairs begin. I promise, I will never complain when I'm inconvenienced in Dallas due to road constructions. And for every detour I must take, I'll drive slowly, thinking about how lucky I am instead of upset because I had to drive a little out of my way. Tragedies like this, puts things into a different perspective, doesn't it?

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI Nosy? Absolutely not! I was touched by your concern. And yes, in AR we are all connected in a very special way to one another. ( Well, many of us) Lol.

Hi Debbie,
It is a relief to hear there was no loss of life.  That, alone is a miracle considering the magnitude of the quake!
